The 49-year-old Moyer mowed through the Diamondbacks lineup, keeping them off balance and waving at his 78 mph fastball. He lasted 6 1-3 innings and surrendered just six hits to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 6-1 win over the reeling Diamondbacks on Wednesday night.

But Moyer (2-3) may have done more to help the Rockies with his legs than his crafty left arm.

With two on and two outs in the fourth inning, Moyer turned on a fastball, dribbling the ball between first base and the mound. He sprinted up the line – or as much as he can on nearly 50-year-old wheels – and managed to avoid the lunging tag of first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.

That scored Jordan Pacheco along with Dexter Fowler, who was motoring on contact from second base. The two RBIs tied Moyer’s career high, which he previously set on June 8, 2004, when he was with the Seattle Mariners.

It also extended the Rockies’ lead to 5-0 – more than enough of a cushion for Moyer.

“Thought I got a piece of him,” Goldschmidt said of his attempted tag of Moyer.

First base umpire Jim Reynolds didn’t quite see it that way and replays were inconclusive.

“Things happened against us tonight that you don’t want to happen, you don’t expect to happen,” manager Kirk Gibson said. “But they do and we were unable to overcome it.”

The Diamondbacks have dropped four of their last five games. Asked if he might shake things up, Gibson quickly dismissed the question.

“If we felt that would be the case, I think we would do that,” Gibson said. “I’m not sure we have a resolution on what we might want to do at this point.”

Most of the damage done Wednesday was by the bottom of Colorado’s lineup. Pacheco, Fowler and Moyer went a combined 6 for 9 with five RBIs. Fowler finished a homer shy of the cycle.

“Fowler, he’s been tough for us,” Gibson said. “He’s always hit us well.”

There was an age difference of 26 years and 243 days between Moyer and Patrick Corbin (2-2), the fourth-largest gap between starting pitchers in baseball history, according to information provided by the Rockies from the Elias Sports Bureau.

It’s the second time this season Moyer has gone up against a 22-year-old counterpart. He faced San Francisco’s Madison Bumgarner on April 12 in a loss.

When Moyer made his major league debut on June 16, 1986, nine of the current Diamondbacks weren’t even born yet, including Corbin.

Seeing him up close and in action, Corbin understands why Moyer has been so effective for so long.

“He’s still going out there and look what he did today, still keeping our hitters off balance,” said Corbin, who allowed six runs in six innings. “That’s why he’s been around so long.”

The main thing with Moyer was that he kept his pitches down. He hardly ever sent a pitch over the teeth of the plate, which frustrated the Diamondbacks.

“He wants you to try to be overaggressive,” said Goldschmidt, who had a double and was struck out twice by Moyer. “Whenever he throws well, he’s keeping the ball down. There have been times when I’m sure he leaves pitches up and guys are able to hit it. He did a good job tonight.”

Too bad members of the Diamondbacks coaching staff couldn’t have stepped into the batter’s box and faced Moyer. Some of them had decent numbers against him.

Gibson was 4 for 10 against Moyer in his career, while third base coach Matt Williams was 3 for 11 and bench coach Alan Trammell 3 for 17.

First base coach Eric Young wasn’t as fortunate, going hitless in 12 at-bats against Moyer.

“He disrupts your timing,” Gibson explained.

Moyer reminds Gibson of a former teammate with the Detroit Tigers, Frank Tanana.

“His fastball was 83 tops and he’d break four bats a game,” Gibson said of Tanana. “Moyer is the same way, has a way of working the outside part of the plate. Gets you reaching and next thing you know he’s throwing 80 mph on your hands and saws you off.”

While a great many of those standing on corners with signs are certainly needy, 4 On Your Side Investigator Rick Sallinger found some are involved in dealing heroin.

The signs are often sincere for those who can find nowhere else to turn, but Sallinger put on a disguise, went undercover, and found they can also serve as signals for those who are selling black tar heroin or to get tips from those who do.

“How you doing? Hey know where I can get me any stuff?” Sallinger asked one panhandler on Speer Boulevard near the Cherry Creek Bike Path. Sallinger was driving a car at the time.

“What kind?” the man replied.

“Black tar?” Sallinger said.

“I’ve my cart. I can’t go with.” the man said.

“Let me come around,” Sallinger said.

Sallinger also approached another panhandler who told him he had “good stuff.”

Billy Woodward knows all about it. He’s a former heroin addict.

“I would always find heroin through the homeless. I would find anything I could get through the homeless; whether that be methamphetamine, cocaine,” Woodward said.

The Cherry Creek Bike Path is used by families, joggers and cyclists for recreation, but beneath one bridge Sallinger found a whole different world.

“A homeless guy told me you might have some black tar? You do?” Sallinger asked a man under the bridge.  He told Sallinger to go around to the other side of the creek.

Another conversation went as follows:

Sallinger: Are you homeless?

Man: Yeah, but I got a lot of dope.

Sallinger: You got lots of dope? Yeah? Well, black tar is what the guy up there told me you had.

Man: Yeah, I got black and white.

The man told Sallinger to follow him under the bridge, but Sallinger told him someone was coming and backed away. But the man came stumbling after him, producing the drugs hidden inside his mouth.

Sallinger: Let me see that.

Man: I have two blacks and I got two whites.

Sallinger: That’s black tar?

Man: This is black — these two black ones.

Sallinger: And how much?

Man: That one is $25 and the other is $15.

The black was heroin and the white was cocaine.

It makes some wonder about whether it’s a good idea to give to the homeless. John Parvensky is president of the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless.

“It’s a personal decision whether you give or not. There may be some people who are in fact addicted and providing money to them just may be feeding their addiction,” Parvensky said.

Parvensky says what they really need is help.

Those dealing the heroin warned Sallinger that police are everywhere. In fact one even suspected Sallinger was a police officer.

Most women will tell you they’ve done it or they know someone who has done it –”smuggled” some shoes via their “don’t ask, don’t tell” account, or used a credit card on the “witness protection list.” But eventually that financial infidelity can catch up with you and escalate, which can lead to more serious consequences like divorce.

Whether you call it “don’t ask, don’t tell” money or “smuggling,” some financial planners say it’s a slippery slope and couples need to be honest about what they’re spending and when they’re spending it, so have a plan to splurge.

“Rule No. 1 — mine, yours and ours — so everybody has their own accounts that they can do whatever they want, nobody has to know, nobody has to approve it. I can buy $50 a dozen golf balls and (she) can spend whatever it costs to get her hair colored,” financial planner Brian Sells said.

Here are some other rules so you don’t commit financial infidelity:

– Be truthful. Secrets are one of the top reasons given for divorce. About 13 percent say they have broken up or gotten divorced over secretive spending.

– About 10 percent confessed to serious spending secrets, including secret bank accounts or hidden credit cards.

You should always listen to your momma and grandma — after all, I’m sure they’ll tell you they didn’t get to be old by being fools.

But the message here is have your money — just be honest about having it.

The new screening just started on Feb. 1 and one baby has already been diagnosed with the rare disease.

While having a child with the immune deficiency disease is heartbreaking, finding the disorder early can be lifesaving.

As 6-year-old Quinten Clark got hooked up to an IV, he made a fuss, but it was a familiar routine. Quinten needs monthly infusions at National Jewish Health to fight infection. It wasn’t always that way.

“He was born healthy; healthy, happy, normal,” Quinten’s mother Lisa Clark said.

But at three months old, after exhausting the immunities passed on by his mother, Quinten got pneumonia and just kept getting worse.

“There were a couple nights when I was in the hospital when they didn’t think he was going to make it through the night,” Clark said.

The diagnosis was Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease, or SCID. It’s a rare inherited disorder often called “Bubble Boy Disease.”

“His little body had destroyed his immune system,” Clark said.

Back then, blood taken from newborns in Colorado tested for dozens of diseases, but not SCID. This year, that changed. In February, Colorado became the seventh state to add SCID to newborn screening. In the first week, a case was detected. Dr. Erwin Gelfand says that infant is doing well.

With early treatment the baby will undergo a bone marrow transplant, a possible cure.

“The earlier the recognition the more likely we are to prevent some of the consequences of late diagnosis,” Gelfand said.

Quinten is small and suffers hearing loss. If he’d been tested at birth it could have made a huge difference.

As Quinten waits for a bone marrow match, Clark is happy the new test means other SCID children won’t get sick and their parents won’t suffer the same heartache.

For now, Quentin stays healthy on his medications. He is able to go school. His parents are anxious to find a bone marrow match.

United (6-4-3) is undefeated in six home games after opening the season with a 1-0 loss to Kansas City.

Matt Pickens made eight saves for the Rapids (5-6-0). They went 1-2 on a three-game trip.

The Rapids, shut out for the third time this season, are 1-8-5 in Washington since 2000.

Salihi, signed as a designated player from Austrian club Rapid Vienna this winter, scored twice in United’s recent three-game trip.

After twice forcing saves from Pickens on close-range headers, Salihi got his first home goal in the 60th minute, sweeping in the rebound of Branko Boskovic’s header.

De Rosario put United ahead in the 25th minute when he reached Lewis Neal’s diagonal ball after Neal turned a midfield giveaway into a counterattack.

It was Neal’s first assist of the season, in just his second start.

Two minutes later, Pickens made two impressive saves to keep Colorado in it, pushing over De Rosario’s deflected shot before thwarting Robbie Russel’s header off Boskovic’s corner. Pickens also denied Salihi’s goal-bound effort, also from Boskovic’s corner kick, 2 minutes into the second half.

Bill Hamid needed just two saves to preserve United’s fourth shutout of the season. United will play twice more at home during the next 10 days, then won’t return until a June 30 game against Montreal.

The Rapids will play five of their next six games at home.

While the district says it’s necessary to cut spending, students and parents aren’t pleased.

The Eagle County School District is calling it a blended online learning model. They’ve tested it out at the Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy, which specializes in distance education with students. But even the teacher from that class, who was laid off, says it’s going to hurt the students.

“I knew there were going to be cuts but I never thought the foreign languages were targets,” teacher Cynthia Blanke said.

Blanke has worked for Eagle County Schools for 17 years, teaching everything from Latin, German, Spanish and French. But she was told her services were no longer needed.

“It was a total surprise to me,” Blanke said.

The Eagle County School District is cutting $5.5 million from its budget and sees a switch to software as one cost-cutting answer. It’s something that Blanke had already used at the Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy.

“Huge differences, huge differences,” she said. “In a nutshell, it’s the interaction between the teacher and the student that’s missing.”

It presents a hard choice for over 100 students who are already studying the languages that are making the high-tech switch.

“I know someone who is going to do it because they don’t want to take another language, and they’re passionate about the language they’re taking,” Battle Mountain High School freshman George Jouflas said.

The district will provide an aide for students in the classroom, but many people don’t think it’s the correct answer.

“You don’t get the hands on experience or culture from a teacher or someone who personally has experience with it,” Jouflas said.

Eagle County Schools doesn’t have a foreign language graduation requirement, but it’s recommended for nearly all college admissions.

“Students just aren’t given the option they’d normally be given to fulfill the classes they want,” Jouflas said.

“I’m worried about the kids, I really am,” Blanke said.

At the district’s largest schools, like Battle Mountain, a few teachers have been kept on staff. About 140 students take Mandarin. That teacher was re-hired through a grant. So many students take Spanish that those teachers are being retained.

The district says it will assess next year if the blended online learning model is working or not.

Last month Jimma Pal Reat was murdered after a suspected road rage incident. Pal Reat was fleeing his pursuers into Lakewood when he called 911. The dispatcher told Pal Reat he should return to Denver to file a police report. He did, but was murdered moments before police arrived.

Denver 911 records say that operator had been verbally reprimanded less than two months before the shooting.

The city fired the operator on Tuesday. On Wednesday the emergency department detailed exactly what went wrong that night.

“This event was so egregious, so serious; obviously we don’t start with a verbal reprimand,” Denver 911 Director Carl Simpson said.

Simpson says he had plenty of cause for firing the dispatcher that handled the call.

Denver 911 received a frantic call just after 4 a.m. on April 1. A group of Hispanic men attacked the car Pal Reat was in, throwing bottles and breaking a window. The caller also said he had been injured in the attack.

Denver 911 says under their policy that was enough to have a city officer and an ambulance respond out of city limits. Instead, the dispatcher demanded the car return to Denver. It led to the same suspects in a stolen Jeep opening fire on the group they had previously attacked.

The termination letter to the dispatcher says, “Your failure to address the medical concerns of your caller in your quest to make sure the caller was in Denver is unacceptable by any standard.”

“It’s a terrible call. It’s the worst call that we’ll have in 2012,” Simpson said.

Emergency response says dispatch had enough information in the first 30 seconds of the call to respond. But the dispatcher waited more than seven minutes to do anything.

The termination letter goes on to say, “The overall failure to adhere to policy and procedure resulted in a tragic ending.”

Pal Reat’s family has been asking for the firing for months. They say Denver officials still have more work to do.

“We’re not satisfied yet. We’re not 100 percent satisfied until the killer is brought to justice,” Pal Reat’s brother Changkuoth Pal said.

Denver police say they have no new information on the homicide and no suspects or persons of interest.

Emergency response says the dispatcher may still appeal to get his job back, but they did not release his name because of the ongoing murder investigation.

One firefighter was hurt while fighting the fire Tuesday night. That firefighter has been treated and released.

The fire is burning about 20 miles northwest of Fort Collins, 10 miles west of the junction of Highway 14 and Highway 287 near the Hewlett Gulch Trail in the Poudre Canyon.

Although structures are located near the fire, none are immediately threatened. Smoke is visible from Fort Collins.

Fire spokeswoman Reghan Cloudman said the fire is within a quarter mile of some homes. It is burning on federal and private land about 20 miles northwest of Fort Collins.

Those who live within a five mile section of Highway 14 remain on notice.

A notification was also sent to those living in a one mile radius of Mount Mahogany and Gordon Creek Lane. All residents in this area are asked to prepare for a possible evacuation. An evacuation has not been ordered, but you should be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.

The Bonner Peaks, Bonner Springs, and Glacier View areas are also on pre-evacuation notice.

The fire is five percent contained and the rocky terrain is making the fire very difficult to fight. Gusty winds could also hamper their efforts to get the upper hand on the wildfire.

There are 200 firefighters are fighting the fire on the ground. A heavy air tanker are dropping fire retardant along with two helicopters, the Type 1 and 3 helicopters, which will be dropping water on the fire throughout the day.

Wednesday firefighters were planning to focus on structure protection, securing a fire line in areas near the community and public and firefighter safety.

Hewlett Fire Operations and the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office are coordinating and planning with Glacier View and Livermore Fire Protection Districts in the event the fire should move in that direction.

Homeowners have been taking the warning very seriously and have been packing up just in case.

“I’ve got pictures and some clothes and food for the dogs and the cats,” Poudre Park resident Maureen McFarland said. “Beyond that you just kind of shut down. You can’t take everything from your home. You can only grab the jewelry and the stuff that I feel is important.”

Jackie Parks with the US Forest Service said the winds are forecasted to remain persistent overnight.

“That means our fire will remain active,” Park said.

The Hewlett Gulch Trail, Greyrock Trail and the area surrounding the trails are closed.

The fire began Monday at about 1 p.m. What sparked the fire was human caused but investigators haven’t determined if it was intentional.

The Larimer County Health Department issued a warning for those with respiratory conditions. They advise that if you can see or smell smoke, avoid outdoor physical activities and stay inside with the windows and doors closed.

Children are more likely to be affected by health threats from smoke because their airways are still developing and because they breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults. Children also are more likely to be active outdoors.

Older adults are more likely to be affected by smoke, as they have higher levels of heart or lung diseases than younger people.

4 On Your Side Money Saver Suzanne McCarroll found happily married couples who admit to keeping some money secrets. A lot of the secrecy revolves around shopping and credit cards.

The majority of those who admit financial cheating say they have a credit card tucked away that their spouse knows nothing about.

Patty Spurway keeps her shopping bags in her trunk so her husband of 40 years doesn’t know what she buys.

“It’s easier on me and easier on the marriage,” Spurway said.

Brian Sells and his wife Nancy never bicker over who pays the lunch bill, but there are bills that Brian finds hard to digest.

“I’m a financial planner, and so we had a little situation where we found a mystery credit card that had racked up a little bit of money on,” Brian said.

Nancy said she had been buying clothes.

“But I get the mail,” Nancy said.

Secrets about money are incredibly common in couples, according to a new study by CreditCards.com.

“About six million people have some kind of financial account that they kept secret,” Ben Woolsey with CreditCards.com said.

Women are most likely to have secret savings accounts. Men are more likely to have covert credit cards. The average purchase hidden from a spouse is $266.

“Most of the issues or the hiding came from women, not men. Well that didn’t surprise me, just based on people that I’ve talked to and just being in my business,” Brian said.

Spurway apparently isn’t the only one with a stash of secrets in her trunk.

“I would assume everyone shops like this,” she said.

Police said an out-of-control driver smashed a vehicle through a shed and then into a home at 50th and Sherman.

It happened at about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

The driver took off after the crash.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

The man robbed the US Bank located at 802 Grand Avenue at about 1:40 p.m. April 27.

The robber is described as a white man, 5-feet-10, 170 pounds, wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt with “John Deere” in white lettering, cargo shorts, dark-colored baseball hat and glasses.

The Rocky Mountain Deaf School is currently operating in a strip mall in Golden. The school wants to build a new facility 10 miles away in Lakewood.

Administrators say the move is overdue. Not only because they are busting at the seams with lack of space but because time is running out to make a move.

“It’s been 14 years that we’ve been looking for a place to call home for Rocky Mountain Deaf School,” said Rocky Mountain Deaf School Director Nancy Bridenbaugh. “Our new school, we want it to be built.”

The school received a $13 million grant from the state to build their own school. They must find that land by November or risk losing the money.

“We just had the roof fall off and while they were trying to repair it, it rained,” said Bridenbaugh.

The classrooms are small and basketball games are played in a room with a carpeted floor.

The school wants to build on Lakewood’s Hutchinson Park area, nestled in a neighborhood. Some of the land is owned by Jefferson County with the intention of becoming a school.

Not everyone in the neighborhood agrees with the plan.

“We’re standing on the 10 acres being voted for rezoning by the planning commission tonight but the developer donated this as part of 40 acres which leads all the way to the houses there,” said neighbor Mike Davenport.

Davenport also said JeffCo Schools was given 10 acres of this land several decades ago, but he believes the land went back to the city if the school wasn’t built within eight years.

The neighborhood also worries about increased traffic from a school built on a dead end street.

The City of Lakewood will have to vote to rezone the land to a Pre-K to 12 grade school from what it is now.

“It is zoned for an elementary school and typically has 500-700 kids and we only have 100 students so it will have much less of an impact,” said Bridenbaugh.

Lakewood’s planning commission will host a public hearing and vote on their recommendation for the land at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Lakewood City Council Chambers, Civic Center South, 480 S. Allison Parkway.

Tonight’s recommendation then goes to the Lakewood City Council for a final vote.

Harrington is expected to be back on the court in time for summer workouts.

A key reserve, Harrington hurt his knee in a win over the Orlando Magic on April 1, but played through the persistent pain down the stretch. He averaged 14 points and six rebounds during the regular season.

He averaged nearly 10 points during a first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers, including 24 in a Game 7 loss that ended Denver’s season.

“For probably the last six months or so, I get these calls. It’s three, four, five times a week, long distance number from different area codes. It’s a robo-call that says if you’d like to lower your credit card rates,” Horvath told CBS4.

Judie Wass has the same problem, but different telemarketers. She gets calls two or three times a day from a company called Pacifictel, offering debt consolidation.

“It’s very, very upsetting because financially I’ve struggled and I’ve tried really hard to straighten it out and this just brings it all back,” Wass said.

A Google search brings up hundreds of the same complaints about Pacifictel; aggressive robo-calls with various numbers showing up on caller ID. CBS4 couldn’t find any information on a legitimate company offering debt consolidation under the name Pacifictel.

“If you’re on the no-call list and you’re getting automated calls chances are those are bogus,” said Jan Zavislan, Deputy Attorney General in charge of the Consumer Protection Section.

The Colorado No-Call List was created in 2002, and the National Do Not Call Registry was created at about the same time. Both were designed to cut down on the number of unwanted solicitation calls. Telemarketers are supposed to scrub their call sheets of any phone numbers that appear on the no-call lists. Horvath and Wass are signed up on the no-call lists and still their phones ring.

“Even when this was first adopted back in 2002, we made it very clear that this was going to make a significant difference, but there will always be companies that operate outside the law,” Zavislan said.

Tracking down bogus callers is nearly impossible. The number that appears on the caller ID is usually not the number the call is coming from. It’s called “caller ID spoofing” and companies use it hide their location.

“The telemarketing companies are using technology that is illegal to make it appear on caller ID that the number that is doing the calling is different than what it really is,” Zavislan explained.

If you call the number on your caller ID to try to make the telemarketers stop, you usually get a busy signal, or a recorded message, or you could end up talking to Bill Benegar.

“I’ve got four pages of calls here, all from different days,” Benegar told CBS4.

Benegar believes his private cellphone number showed up on caller ID’s all over the country, as Pacifictel solicited credit information. He’s been inundated with calls from people saying they were contacted by Pacifictel.

“A couple of them were pretty nasty to me and they said some pretty bad things,” Benegar said.

He got so many angry calls he had to stop answering his phone; it was eating up his minutes. Benegar says he was able to work with the Federal Communications Commission to get the calls to his phone to stop, so he didn’t have to change his phone number.

“I just want everyone to know, don’t pick up the phone to telemarketers,” Benegar said.

That’s good advice. The Colorado Attorney General’s Office advises people if there is a message on your answering machine to delete it and if it’s an automated call, just hang up.

Sometimes the robo-call gives you the option of pushing a button to be taken off the list, but the AG’s Office says don’t fall for that one.

“They tell you to push three and I pushed it, and pushed it, and pushed it. Next day I get calls again,” Wass explained.

“All you’re doing is you’re letting a telemarketer somewhere know that you’re a potential live consumer. So you’re increasing the value of your name and number to the telemarketer,” Zavislan said.

There are some things you can do to keep those unwanted calls to a minimum:

– Make sure all your phone numbers are registered with the Colorado No-Call List.

– Make sure all your phone numbers are registered with the National Do Not Call Registry.

– Be cautious about filling out sweepstakes entries or online surveys, those companies often sell your information to telemarketers.

– Consider getting a “No Solicitation” recording on your phone, that will help stop the robo-calls but it does come with a cost.

If you do continue to get unsolicited calls from telemarketers, the Colorado Attorney General’s Office and the Federal Trade Commission want to hear from you. They want you to file a complaint on their website and include the number on your caller ID, even if it’s bogus. If these agencies get enough similar complaints they will investigate and sometimes successfully shut down telemarketers that operate illegally.

The wind conditions are causing up to 30 minute delays for arrivals and departures.

There is no confirmation on whether any flights have been diverted because of the windy conditions.

At least two commercial flights were diverted because of wind at the airport in Colorado Springs.

CBS4′s Justin McHeffey took to the water at Chatfield State Park on Wednesday morning to try out some traditional kayaking moves. The water was pretty cold but kayakers tend to wear wetsuits in the water, which help keep them warm.

McHeffey tried out some interesting techniques like the wet exit, bow rescue and rolls in the introductory kayaking class with Renaissance Adventure Guides at the Chatfield Reservoir.

The body was found at about 8 a.m. Wednesday near Interstate 76 and Weld County Road 12 1/2, which is on the west side of the town of Hudson by an irrigation worker on a farm.

The man’s body was found wrapped in a blue tarp. Investigators said the body is described as a man in his 30s.

Weld County Sheriff’s deputies are also assisting in the investigation.

Denver Civic Center was recommended by a U.S. Department of the Interior agency to become a National Historic Landmark.

“Civic Center serves as the keystone for the entire Denver Parks system and sits literally where the city’s cultural, community and commercial realms converge,” Hancock said at the meeting. “For Civic Center to receive the honor of becoming National Historic Landmark would shine a spotlight on this city treasure and help to deliver Denver as a world-class city.”

Included in the designation for the Civic Center is Civic Center Park, Veteran’s Park, the McNichols Building, the City and County Building, and the Colorado State Capitol.

“Civic Center would join a list of some of the most iconic, treasured and historically significant spaces in the United States,” the mayor’s office said in a statement. “Designation would place Civic Center alongside such sites as the Empire State Building, the Alamo and the Library of Congress.”

The recommendation will go to the National Park Service Advisory Board on May 22 and 23. The board will advance their recommendations to Interior Secretary, and Colorado native, Ken Salazar, who will officially designate the new National Historic Landmarks.

It’s one of two schools facing allegations of cheating to inflate student scores. Those schools are Hallett Fundamental Academy and Beach Court Elementary.

Principals at both schools are on administrative leave.

The scores in question come from spring 2011 CSAP scores. The district won’t confirm the schools involved but sources tell CBS4 that Beach Court Elementary, praised for its exceptional student achievement, is one of the schools under investigation.

“In the very, very limited number of instances where there were statistically unusual results, we felt it was important for the state to look into that,” said Denver Public Schools Superintendent Tom Boasberg.

Boasberg said several numbers factored into the analysis of the scores and the Colorado Department of Education was asked to review the results when they came back above average.

“When we did this analysis looking at how many, for example, erasures there were of wrong answers that were erased and made in to right answers,” said Boasberg.

The trade publication EdNews Colorado reports that the second school involved is Hallett Fundamental Academy.

DPS said it’s too early to know if scores were tampered with or if the results can be logically explained.

“If anything improper has occurred there will certainly be accountability,” said Boasberg.

The investigation is being handled by a third party. It should wrap up within the next few weeks.

Ambulances, medical helicopters, and Black Hawks with the National Guard were all taking part in a disaster drill at Denver International Airport called a full-scale Federal Coordinating Center, or FCC.

The Federal Coordinating Center exercise simulated a tornado disaster. In a real disaster, DIA would become an evacuation site that could take in victims from around the world.

The exercise was a major test of the National Disaster Medical System, or NDMS, under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security.

Emergency service agencies from all over the Front Range partnered with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Eastern Colorado Health Care System for the exercise.

Practicing helps to ensure that if there was a real disaster, several different agencies could work together and communicate as seamlessly as possible.

Zachary Josef Picciano was arrested on Monday.

During the investigation, detectives discovered Picciano, 22, was engaging in an online relationship with a juvenile girl from Parker.

They claim Picciano agreed to meet the girl for purposes of a sexual encounter. He arrived at the predetermined meet location and was arrested.

The Parker Police Department is a member of the national Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Parker Police detectives started investigating Chase Alexander Taylor in March for an alleged online relationship with a juvenile girl from Parker.

Investigators say they discovered that Taylor, 27, had sent sexually explicit photographs to the girl. Taylor agreed to meet the girl for purposes of a sexual encounter.

The Parker Police Department is a member of the national Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and worked with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office on the case.

The Legislature convened its first special session since 2006 on Monday. Lawmakers were called back to Denver by Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper, who wanted them to reconsider a civil unions measure for same-sex couples.

But the civil unions proposal failed in a Republican House committee, and many of the additional bills Hickenlooper asked lawmakers to consider perished, too.

The Senate rejected a proposal to set a blood marijuana limit for drivers. A bill to create “benefit corporations” died in the House. The Legislature passed just three bills — one on water projects, one on unemployment insurance and one on machinery regulation.

Worth a return trip to Denver? Many lawmakers weren’t sold.

“The bills we passed could’ve been put in other pieces of legislation,” said Rep. Mark Waller, the third-ranking House Republican.

Others insisted they needed to return. The nuts-and-bolts bills passed during special session were not passed during the regular term because they were swallowed up in a meltdown over civil unions.

“After what happened last week, it was extremely important that we come back and do the work we were sent here to do,” said Democratic Rep. Andy Kerr.

Senate Democratic President Brandon Shaffer said civil unions was worth coming back to Denver to consider, and that the minor bills passed also were worth the trouble.

“With or without civil unions, I think a special session would have been justified,” Shaffer said.

One of the few legislators who has been through two special sessions — Republican Rep. Larry Liston — said this year’s will be remembered not for the work that was done but what wasn’t done: civil unions.

But Liston insisted the special session wasn’t a waste.

“In hindsight, or retrospect, we had to take care of some other important business,” Liston said. But he was watching the clock: he is one of the lawmakers who face a primary contest next month, and every day in the special session cost him a day on the campaign trail.

“I’ll definitely be walking precincts this time tomorrow,” Liston said.

One bill that passed during the special session will help prevent fire danger. The water bill includes money for building new reservoirs, clearing dead timber from watersheds and using a satellite to track our streams and rivers so we can capture as much water as possible.

“This will impact communities, this will impact agriculture, this will impact our compact deliveries. It is a very significant issue for our state and how we plan for that is all part of this important bill,” said Sen. Gail Schwartz, D-Snowmass Village.

The money comes from severance taxes on the oil and gas industry. The bill funds $61 million worth of loans and grants.

Crossroads GPS was opening its effort Thursday, spending $8 million on an that castigates Obama on the economy by using his words against him.

“We need solutions, not just promises,” says the 60-second commercial that’s to run in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

It shows clips of Obama making pledges that critics say he hasn’t kept on issues like taxes, health care and federal deficits.

“We must help the millions of homeowners who are facing foreclosure,” Obama says in a clip from June 2008. The ad then says: “Promise broken. One in five mortgages are still under water.”

Obama, Romney and their allies are in a rush to define each other negatively before voters tune out during the summer. Already, both sides are going for the jugular in a sign of the sharply negative race to come.

Crossroads GPS’ ad push is the latest to illustrate the degree to which this presidential campaign is playing out under dramatically looser campaign finance laws after a series of Supreme Court decisions allowed independent groups to raise and spend unlimited sums as long as they don’t coordinate directly with the campaigns they support.

The push also comes as several other Republican-leaning super PACs have been spending millions on ads in key states to tear down Obama while Romney, the underfunded challenger to the record-shattering Democratic president, focuses on raising money after a primary season that left him broke and battered.

The super PAC Restore Our Future, staffed with former Romney aides, has spent $4.3 million, while Americans for Prosperity, the Koch brothers’ group, has spent $5 million. The American Future Fund, whose goal is to promote conservative and free-market ideas, is spending an additional $4.7 million to run a one-minute ad suggesting Obama hasn’t cracked down on Wall Street because of his campaign’s fundraising. “Tell Obama to stop protecting his Wall Street donors,” the ad says.

On the Democratic side, Obama’s campaign has launched its own $25 million, monthlong ad push in the most competitive states. In recent days, it’s started going after Romney’s business credentials, specifically his time at the helm of the private equity firm Bain Capital. The campaign was running an ad Wednesday on the matter but in just a handful of states and at a very low price tag, just under $100,000.

But the real money to promote the same message was coming from a pro-Obama super PAC, Priorities USA Action. It’s spending $4 million to air its new ad, which is remarkably similar to the one from Obama’s campaign. Both highlight the failure of GST Steel, a Kansas City, Mo.-based company purchased by Bain Capital that went bankrupt and laid off 750 workers in 2001.

Unlike the groups on the right, Priorities USA Action has struggled to raise money, taking in about $10 million through its super PAC and affiliated nonprofit arm by the end of March. The group has spent only $2.7 million on ads in May.

Still, Obama’s campaign opened the month of April with more than $100 million in the bank, a 10-to-1 fundraising advantage over Romney. On Wednesday, the president’s re-election team reported raising a combined $43.6 million in April for his campaign and the Democratic Party.

Although Obama’s April haul fell short of the $53 million he brought in in March, he remains far ahead of Romney in the amount of cash on hand. The president also pulled in about $15 million last week at a Hollywood fundraising event.

Obama’s campaign and the Democratic Party ended March with about $124 million cash on hand, while Romney and the GOP reported $43 million left in the bank at the end of that month, according to federal reports.

But the president’s money advantage is minimized by the campaign cash raised by Republican-leaning super PACs.

Crossroads GPS told the IRS it raised more than $77 million through December. Donors could include individuals, businesses or trade groups. Without naming names, Crossroads reported two gifts of $10 million each and four of more than $4 million.

American Crossroads, its ally, has raised $100 million so far this election cycle to defeat Obama and support the Republican nominee. Combined, the Crossroads twins have announced plans to spend as much as $300 million to influence the presidential election, with longtime George W. Bush political adviser Karl Rove guiding them.

While the Republican groups legally can’t coordinate directly with the Romney campaign, they do coordinate with each other. Leaders of some top Republican super PACs attend a monthly meeting hosted by Crossroads to share information and devise strategy to deny Obama a second term. That may mean, for example, taking turns ensuring Romney has a presence on the air — or, rather, the Republican criticisms against Obama are aired — even if his campaign itself can’t afford to run its own ads yet.

The Romney campaign has spent no money on TV ads since Romney’s Republican opponents dropped out and cleared his path to the nomination.

Republicans have generally welcomed the emergence of super PACs, and several GOP-leaning groups spent millions to take control of the House and pick up six Senate seats in 2010. Obama sharply criticized the emergence of super PACs that year but ultimately green-lighted contributions to Priorities USA Action after it became clear that his campaign and other Democrats would be vastly outgunned otherwise.

By law, campaigns and the outside groups are forbidden from working with each other. But at times like this, the lines of separation seem blurred if not crossed.

Strategists for the super PACs insist they are operating independently and are not relying on signals from the presidential campaigns as to what advertising strategy to pursue. But campaign finance watchdogs are crying foul, arguing that super PACs have effectively become high-dollar shadow campaign operations for candidates otherwise constrained by much stricter federal campaign finance rules.

Moreno was pulled over in South Denver on Feb. 1 after allegedly driving 70 mph in an interstate construction zone where the speed limit was 45 mph.

In addition to DUI charges, Moreno was also charged with careless driving and driving without insurance.

Moreno is scheduled for trial on Oct. 3.

At the time of his arrest, the Broncos issued a written statement saying they take the incident very seriously and will monitor the case while the legal process runs its course.

Eddie Fisher, 38, was arrested at about 1:25 a.m. Tuesday and faces charges of assault, disturbing the peace and destruction of property.

According to police documents, officers rushed to Fisher’s girlfriend’s home in the 600 block of North Clermont Street after the woman asked her roommate to call police.

When they arrived, Fisher was outside and flagged down officers.

Fisher, who was bleeding from his forehead, told police his girlfriend was acting hysterical. He said she trapped him in the bathroom and struck him several times on the forehead.

Fisher said he was trying to drive away when his girlfriend took his dog and he went back into the house.

The roommate told police she heard the couple fighting when they came home about 11:15 p.m. Monday but that she fell back asleep. About two hours later she woke up when she heard them yelling.

Police said the altercation between the two began when they were coming home from a bar and that Fisher’s girlfriend had received a text and he became upset because he thought she was cheating on him.

That’s when Fisher’s girlfriend told police that he grabbed her and threw her down and she took the dog and ran inside the house to hide.

Once Fisher went back inside, police said his girlfriend ran into the bathroom and locked herself inside. She also braced herself between the door and the bathroom sink cabinet.

Fisher then allegedly forced the door open until the cabinet broke off the wall and he was able to get inside. That’s when his girlfriend asked her roommate to call police.

Officers also interviewed a 7-year-old girl who was in the home at the time of the altercation. She told police that she saw “Eddie” trying to get into the bathroom and that he eventually did. She also told police she heard a commotion but didn’t see what happened in the bathroom.

In their report, officers observed that the cabinet holding the bathroom sink had been broken off the wall and pushed halfway to the floor.

Fisher was taken to Denver Health Medical Center due to his intoxication and minor injuries. His girlfriend was also taken to the same hospital for a bruise on her left tricep area, a bruise on her left thigh, a cut lip and an abrasion on her hand.

Fisher and his girlfriend had been dating for about two months.

In the mugshot taken by police of Fisher on Tuesday, Fisher has a wound on his forehead and his eyes appear glassy.

It hasn’t happened much.

Marco Scutaro homered off closer Santiago Casilla to lead off the ninth inning and lift the Rockies past the mistake-prone San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Tuesday night. Scutaro smacked a 92 mph fastball from Casilla (0-2) just over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season after Colorado blew a three-run lead.

“It took some character, which I think this team has a lot of,” Tracy said. “Now we didn’t necessarily have to do it in the fashion that we did.”

Just the typical Rockies way.

Troy Tulowitzki, Michael Cuddyer, Carlos Gonzalez andJordan Pacheco each drove in a run as the Rockies took advantage of three Giants errors to snap a four-game losing streak.

“Losing is no fun,” Scutaro said. “It gets tired real quickly. Hopefully this will spark us.”

After building a 4-1 lead, Colorado almost collapsed.

Rex Brothers (2-2) struck out Brandon Belt and Melky Cabrera with the bases loaded in the eighth. Rafael Betancourt struck out Nate Schierholtz looking with two on in the ninth – following a questionable check swing a pitch earlier that had Tracy infuriated – for his seventh save in eight chances.

“Stuff like that,” Brothers said, “it hasn’t been easy yet.”

Solid outings by both starters were washed away.

Colorado’s Jeremy Guthrie - a former Stanford standout – allowed four hits and one unearned run in 5 1-3 innings in his first start since April 22. He had gone on the disabled list after falling off his bicycle on the way to the ballpark last month.

Tim Lincecum lasted seven innings, striking out seven and walking three for the Giants. At the very least, Lincecum’s lethargic starts this season finally disappeared.

Not much else about the final result did.

Gregor Blanco singled leading off the third, stole second and advanced to third on catcher Pacheco’s throwing error. He scored on Brandon Belt‘s fly out to give San Francisco a 1-0 lead.

A night after taking a foul ball from teammate Dexter Fowler off his left leg, Tulowitzki played through soreness and singled in the fourth to score Gonzalez from second for the tying run. Gonzalez’s one-out double that landed inches inside the left-field chalk was the first hit off Lincecum, who gave up little on a cold, foggy night under the lights in San Francisco’s windy waterfront ballpark.

“It’s not a step forward or backward. It’s just another game,” Lincecum said. “I put myself in tough situations and I couldn’t put a stop to it.”

The Giants defense handed Colorado the rest.

Giants third baseman Joaquin Arias left in the fourth after a pitch hit his left forearm. X-rays showed no break, and the team diagnosed Arias with a bruise. Charlie Culberson replaced him at second, moving Emmanuel Burriss to third.

Burriss blew an infield pop by Tyler Colvin for what should’ve been the final out of Colorado’s fifth. He was charged with an error, but San Francisco caught a break when Pacheco – who had reached on a double – only advanced to third on the play. Jonathan Herrera flied out to center to end the inning.

The Rockies refused to let another gift go unwrapped.

Tulowitzki’s line-drive single to center in the sixth rolled under the glove of a charging Angel Pagan, allowing the slow-footed Tulowitzki – who might’ve scored if healthy – to easily jog to third on the error when the ball rolled all the way to the 399-foot sign. Cuddyer followed with an RBI double and Pacheco’s sacrifice fly put the Rockies ahead 3-1.

The Giants added another error when catcher Buster Posey threw behind shortstop Brandon Crawford trying to nab Colvin at second. Gonzalez drove in Colvin from third with two outs.

Even still, San Francisco had its shots.

Cabrera’s two-run double off Josh Outman highlighted a three-run seventh for the Giants. Pagan’s two-out single against Matt Belisle evened the score at 4-all before Culberson struck out with Pagan at third.

“It’s good to win,” Tracy said, “but let’s be mindful of what is still not right.”

Playing for the sixth time in 11 days, Los Angeles gave San Antonio its toughest first half of the playoffs before fading fast. And unlike their stunning Game 1 comeback at Memphis in the first round, the Clippers didn’t have the wind this time.

Manu Ginobili added 22 points for the Spurs, who’ve won 15 in a row. It’s the longest winning streak sustained in the NBA playoffs since the 2004 Spurs won 17 straight.

“It’s the playoffs. It’s going to be physical. We knew that coming in,” Duncan said. “We just expected to attack the basket as much as possible.”

Eric Bledsoe led the Clippers with 23 points.

Game 2 is Thursday night.

That gives the beat-up and banged-up Clippers one full day of rest — which is all the time they’ve had to recover between games for the past week and a half.

Los Angeles couldn’t even fly home first after knocking out the Grizzlies on Sunday in Game 7 of a grueling series that had the Clippers hobbling next to Texas. Blake Griffin scored 15 points in 28 minutes a day after estimating his sprained left knee had him feeling “80 percent” at best.

The Clippers said the injury is bad enough that their All-Star and leading scorer might be missing up to two weeks if this were the regular season. But unlike in Game 7 on Sunday, Griffin didn’t take a seat in the fourth quarter until the Spurs were safely ahead in the final minutes.

Rookie Kawhi Leonard added 16 points, hitting all three of his 3s, and Danny Green added 15 points for the Spurs.

The marquee matchup of the series — All-Star point guards Tony Parker and Chris Paul — was a fizzle. Paul, who ended the first round with an aching hip, scored just six points and didn’t make a single basket in the second half. Parker had seven points and 11 assists.

Caron Butler scored 15 points and Nick Young had 13 for the Clippers. Los Angeles cut the deficit to single digits with a 10-burst in the fourth quarter before San Antonio, which hasn’t lost in a month, ran away with its 11th double-digit victory during this dominating winning streak.

The Clippers didn’t even need San Antonio’s help getting more bumps and bruises: Mo Williams, already playing with his sore right fingers taped, took a lump on the head when teammate Reggie Evans kicked him with an errant foot after Williams fell on his back in the lane.

Williams wobbled when he tried standing, sat back down, and the Clippers burned a timeout. He never left the game, but the Clippers weren’t getting any fresher.

Parker, meanwhile, finally felt the hard knocks and slow-him-down shoves that Utah repeatedly promised but never delivered in the first round. Sometimes, the All-Star looked in vain to officials when the whistle didn’t blow. When that didn’t work once in the first quarter, he kept jabbering about a no-call on the last possession while lining up to shoot free throws on the current one.

Popovich, pacing and sensing an impending technical foul, silenced his leading scorer.

“Tony!” Popovich snapped from the sideline. “Shoot!”

Parker waved off the NBA Coach of the Year — he was under control. But his frustrations didn’t end there. He was 1 for 9 despite playing 38 minutes, scoring all but two of his points at the foul line.

Notes: Before this became the deepest Spurs team yet under Popovich, Butler said he came so close to signing with the Spurs after the lockout that he canceled a flight to San Antonio when the Clippers counteroffered. “They made a great pitch,” Butler said. …Leonard finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting, the highest finish for a Spurs player since Ginobili finished fourth in 2003. Said Popovich: “He’s done a good enough job to make me trust him to be in the starting lineup. I’m happy for him.”

David West scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, George Hill added 15 and the Indiana Pacers took home-court advantage away from Miami by beating the Heat 78-75 in Game 2 of the teams’ Eastern Conference semifinal series Tuesday night.

LeBron James scored 28 points for Miami and Dwyane Wade finished with 24, but both missed big chances for the Heat late. James missed two free throws with 54.3 seconds left and Miami down one, and Wade was short on a layup that would have tied the game with 16 seconds remaining.

Mario Chalmers’ 3-pointer to tie bounced away on the final play, and the series was tied 1-1.

Danny Granger scored 11 points and Paul George added 10 for Indiana, which took advantage of Heat forward Chris Bosh’s absence and outrebounded Miami 50-40.

Game 3 is Thursday in Indianapolis.

James had a chance to give Miami the lead with 1:22 left, but his shot was blocked from behind by George, who was fouled two seconds later. He missed both free throws, keeping the Indiana lead at 76-75. And after Wade missed a jumper, James was fouled by Granger — his sixth — battling for the rebound with 54.3 seconds remaining.

James couldn’t connect on either, and the Heat didn’t score again.

Bosh is expected to miss the rest of the series with a strained abdominal muscle. Without him, James and Wade combined for 52 points — and no other Miami player scored more than five.

A dreadful third quarter by Miami — 3 for 17 shooting — allowed Indiana to lead by as much as 11, before the emotions picked up considerably in the fourth.

Wade was steaming when he missed a shot after trying to create contact with Indiana’s Dahntay Jones with 9:53 left. As Wade argued, Jones went the other way and set Leandro Barbosa up for a score that put the Pacers up 63-56.

Chalmers turned the ball over on the next possession, and as the Pacers took off for what set up as a 2-on-none break, Wade caught Darren Collison from behind and knocked him over. A flagrant-1 was called, Collison hit both free throws, the Indiana lead was nine and tensions were suddenly high.

It all seemed to spark Miami.

The Heat scored the next six points, James — who got hit in the head by Granger with 7:25 left, sparking a bit of shoving that led to double-technicals given to both players — added a putback off an offensive rebound and Wade did the same about a minute later, getting Miami within 69-66 with 5:57 left.

James missed a free throw that would have tied it with 4:30 remaining, but after George got the rebound, James dove in to create a jump ball situation. The MVP easily won the tap, sending it to Wade, whose bank shot over West put Miami back on top 72-71.

Barbosa scored on the next Indiana possession. The Pacers weren’t rattled, and left celebrating minutes later.

Indiana scored 16 points in the first seven minutes of the first half, then scored 17 in the next 17 minutes. And even after a drought like that, Miami’s lead was only 38-33 at the break.

George missed four shots in a 60-second span early on, setting the tone for an icy-cold half by the Pacers. Indiana was up 16-9 midway through the first when the Heat went to a smaller lineup that paid quick dividends.

Three baskets at the rim — a layup by Wade, then James firing a pass to Turiaf for a dunk, followed by a Wade touch pass to James for another slam — erased most of the early deficit, and defense did the rest. Indiana missed 24 of 29 shots in one stretch, and after Hibbert used his size advantage to get three shots in the first 1:11, he only got two attempts over the rest of the half.

Miami was 0-for-7 on shots that would have pushed its margin to double digits in the first half, continuing a trend from Game 1. Neither team ever led the series opener by more than nine either, and when George made a 3-pointer with 6:09 left in the third, the Pacers had pulled into a 46-all tie. A steal and dunk by George followed on the next possession, putting the Pacers back on top.

Before long, the Pacers had that first 10-point edge of the series. Collison’s jumper with 1:29 left in the third put Indiana up 59-49, and the margin was 61-52 entering the fourth.

For as bad as Indiana’s first half was offensively, Miami’s third quarter was equally dreadful — the Heat were outscored 28-14 on 3-for-17 shooting in the period, the third-worst shooting effort by the reigning East champs in any quarter this season.

Los Angeles dominated the opener and was even better in Game 2, withstanding Phoenix’s initial push and string of penalties for a 2-0 series lead.

Dwight King scored his third goal in two games and Quick tied a team record with his third career playoff shutout to give the Kings a dominating lead heading into Game 3 Thursday night in Los Angeles.

The Kings have won nine straight road playoff games in two seasons, matching the NHL record set by the New York Islanders from 1982-83.

The Islanders won the Stanley Cup both of those years.

Quick matched Felix Potvin’s team record for playoff shutouts and Carter finished off his first career playoff hat trick in the third period, securing the Kings’ seventh straight win overall.

The Coyotes played better early and fell apart late, becoming frustrated after being unable to contain the more-skilled Kings.

Phoenix was hit with a string of penalties starting late in the second period, including a game misconduct to captain Shane Doan for boarding Kings center Trevor Lewis. Martin Hanzal also received one for boarding Dustin Brown in the third period and the Coyotes had 13 penalties for 56 minutes — most coming after the final 5 minutes of the second period.

The Kings won the opener 4-2 by outplaying and outhustling Phoenix.

Knowing Phoenix’s makeup, the Kings figured to get more of a pushback in Game 2.

And the Coyotes were much more aggressive early, winning some of the individual battles they lost in Game 1 while creating some decent scoring chances.

Even with all of Phoenix’s hard work and a couple of line changes by coach Dave Tippett, the Kings still managed to score first. King got it, redirecting a shot by Drew Doughty that beat Mike Smith stick side late in the period.

Hard work in the corners by Mike Richards set up Los Angeles’ second goal, by Carter. He muscled the puck past Smith’s glove side as he was going down on a feed from Dustin Penner that made it 2-0 early in the second period.

“I’ve been working hard in practice to get my game where I wanted it,” Carter said.

Then things completely unraveled for the Coyotes.

Doan, who was suspended three games for elbowing earlier in the season, was given a game misconduct and a five-minute boarding penalty for ramming Lewis from behind. Defenseman Keith Yandle was already in the penalty box and Daymond Langkow joined him after a slashing penalty, giving Los Angeles a two-man advantage for more than 2 minutes.

Brown was sent off for diving on a slash by Smith, but that didn’t bother the Kings. Carter scored his second a few seconds later on a redirect of a shot by Anze Kopitar, putting Los Angeles up 3-0.

“It’s no secret we been struggling a bit with the power play and to get some goals will give us confidence on it,” Carter said. “We have some pretty skilled guys out there on the power play.”

With the Coyotes racking up penalties seemingly on every shift, Carter finished them off with his fifth career hat trick, punching in a rebound with the Kings on a two-man advantage after Hanzal’s hit on Brown.

Notes: The Kings were without D Colin Fraser, out of the lineup attending to a family matter. … Coyotes LW Ray Whitney played in his 100th career playoff game. D Michael Stone played his first with Adrian Aucoin still out of the lineup and David Schlemko still not fully healthy. … Rocker Alice Cooper, who lives in the Valley, attended the game. … The last team to win seven straight road playoff games in one season was Chicago in 2010.

The car had parked in one of the front spaces of the parking lot and suddenly drove into the building. After breaking down the doors the car struck the front counter and knocked it back several feet.

Police told CBS4 the driver, a woman, thought the car was in reverse but it was actually in drive and when she pressed on the gas the car shot forward.

The employee working in the store at the time had stepped away from the counter for a minute when the crash happened.

“Everyone’s okay. We just got here so the night shift (worker) was okay, only upset. He was doing something else; if he had been at the register he would have been dead, the way I see it. It’s a big mess right now,” Abraham Gesese, the store owner, told CBS4.

The driver was cited for careless driving. Police said they don’t suspect drugs or alcohol were a factor in the case.

Gesese told CBS4 he expects the store will be closed for several days.

1. Plant flowers.
Brighten up your home with blooming flowers both inside and out. It just so happens that our state flower, the Columbine, does great in Colorado’s summer climate. While the death of the civil unions bill in the Special Legislative Session was widely predicted, exactly how the death blow would be dealt was still in question.

On Monday, we learned that the bill would go to the one committee Speaker Frank McNulty could count on killing it, the State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee.

However, even though the fix was in, there was one remaining bit of drama left for the Civil Unions debate. Rep. Don Coram of Montrose was one of the Republicans who voted against the bill, but before he cast his vote, he told everyone in attendance how proud he was of his gay son.

Then he promptly voted to kill a bill that would have given his son similar rights that his mother and father enjoy.

Rep. Coram’s personal conundrum was short lived, but highlighted a wonderful example of why some people despise politics.

Usually, family ranks above all in life. People work hard in order to feed and care for their kids. When holidays come around, family members are the people you want to spend time with most. In fact, the Republican Party itself values family so much that they were for a long time, the party of family values.

Apparently, something outranks family for Rep. Coram.

Coram explained his “no” vote by saying that he represents a district that does not agree with the Civil Unions bill and that he found the bill would be too much of a contrast with the existing Colorado Constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

In general, those are fine reasons to vote the way he did.

However, in this case, those reasons tend to become fairly awkward when we’re talking about those reasons outweighing the rights of his son.

While I am sure Rep. Coram’s constituents, at least the social conservative ones, appreciate his “no” vote, I have to imagine a very awkward campaign stump speech describing his loyalty later this fall.

Does he actually tell his constituents that he literally chose what he thought they believed in over the rights of his own son? And if he does, do they actually respect him for that? Could they really blame him if he looked into his heart and voted for his son’s rights over the perceived beliefs of his constituents?

Or maybe this wasn’t about constituents at all. Politics can indeed be a game of smoke and mirrors. Maybe Coram’s constituents’ beliefs were the public story and the real story was that this was simply a decision made for the party, and not for anyone else.

While that may indeed be the real story, I certainly hope it isn’t. Because I’d like to hope that, while it has happened elsewhere, in Colorado, an elected representative wouldn’t pick the politics of his party over his own son. That’s simply too sad to consider.

What I prefer to ask myself is what I would think if I were one of Rep. Coram’s constituents and agreed with him on his stance on Civil Unions. Would I appreciate Coram’s vote, or would I be appalled that my elected representative possibly permanently wounded his relationship with his only child in order to stay consistent with my proposed beliefs?

If this one vote irreparably harms the relationship between Coram and his son, is that blood on the hands of his constituents? And if so, do they deserve that blame?

Rep. Coram and his “no” vote have given all of us an excellent opportunity to take a look at what we want really want out of our own elected leaders. Should they follow their hearts or the proposed beliefs of their constituents? If the two are at odds, who should hold the trump card?

And most importantly, what would we do in their shoes?

I know what I would do, and that’s why I will not run for office. Because if constituents are only going to vote for me if I vote against my son, they can go ahead and keep their vote.

“We believe the mission was accomplished,” said Sue Jarrett, who, with her husband Dean, had vigorously lobbied for the Wauneta Volunteer Fire Department to remove two kegs of beer that were a fixture in the Wauneta fire hall.

The Jarretts argued that the firehouse beer tarnished the firefighters’ reputation and created a liability issue.

“It really is a no-brainer,” said Dean Jarrett, who was a volunteer firefighter for 28 years with the WVFD. “Why have that liability when something goes wrong? The biggest fear is that a member drinks too much beer and causes an accident.”

The kegs — one called a “kegerator,” and a second backup keg — had been kept on hand in the firehouse for years for the firefighters, but had become a source of friction in recent months creating division in the 24-member fire department and the community.

The firefighters said they would primarily drink a few beers after returning from fire or accident calls. The department says it averages about two calls a month.

Many of the department’s volunteer firefighters supported the idea of having kegs of beer in the firehouse arguing they are on call 24 hours a day, so beer in the firehouse is no different than beer stored at their homes. They also said firefighters would not respond on calls if they had been drinking at the fire hall and were impaired.

“I don’t have a big problem with it,” said Fire Chief Jeff Gallegos. “If we’ve had a few beers we’re not going to jump on the truck and drive it. I don’t think we have that big an issue.”

Gallegos said the controversy had as much to do with personalities as it had to do with alcohol.

“People don’t feel we should be told what we can and can’t do when we’re volunteering our time,” he said.

Gallegos and other fire officials said the kegs were purchased with proceeds from department fundraisers and community donations.

Dean Jarrett acknowledges that in his role as department secretary/treasurer, he was the one who suggested installing the kegs several years ago as firefighters were spending so much on cases of beer. Jarrett said buying kegs would be more cost effective.

Sue Jarrett actually picked up the “kegerator” that was installed at the department firehouse. But Dean Jarrett says his position changed about a year ago when he attended a CPR class at the fire hall and noticed volunteer firefighters in the class drinking from the keg.

“There appears to be no common sense to when it’s drank and not drank anymore,” said Jarrett. “I think it sends the wrong message, it’s not safe.”

Dean Jarrett said he had seen firefighters show up “visibly impaired” to fight fires but he declined to cite specifics. Other firefighters disputed that assessment.

Dean Jarrett acknowledged there had not been an accident or problem attributed to the firehouse kegs, but he contends it’s an issue of being proactive.

“It’s not a matter of it’s going to happen, it’s a matter of when it’ going to happen,” he said.

Many other residents and volunteer firefighters maintained that the Jarretts seized on the keg issue as a way of settling old scores with adversaries and political enemies in the fire department.

Dozens of Yuma County residents contacted CBS4 about the beer brouhaha, mostly voicing support for the volunteer firefighters and their kegs. Dawn Webster of Wray wrote, “After the hard work that these firefighters do, while not getting a dime in return, the least we can do is let them have a beer at the end of the day.”

State Sen. Greg Brophy, R-Wray, who represents the area, contacted CBS4 to say he had no problem with kegs in the firehouse noting that the nearest liquor stores are in Wray, 15 miles away, making it difficult for firefighters to pick up beers after they’ve been out on a call, especially if its late at night after the liquor stores have closed.

Brophy called Jarrett and his wife “professional cranks” who had alienated the community for years.

Another resident wrote, “They do not just sit around the fire hall drinking beer and going to fires drunk. You are talking about people who work 12 to 14 hours a day six to 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year. Now when they get the page to a fire, they DO head out to wherever they have to go VOLUNTARILY and put their lives at risk for their community and neighbors. Do they have a keg of beer in the fire hall? Well it looks like they do. Is that all they do is sit around drinking? I think NOT. Do they get drunk and then go fight fires? I think NOT. Do they come back to the hall and after putting equipment away and having trucks ready for next time sit around visiting and have a beer? I would say probably yes.”

Dan Steckman, a volunteer firefighter told CBS4, “With all this responsibility it also seems that we should hold ourselves to a higher standard and I believe we do. As such it is probably time to remove the beer keg, as apparently some people think we all just sit down there and drink. I am one to have a beer now and then or even a couple after a meeting. It is the one time a month that I can get away from home and visit with friends and neighbors, never have I said or heard anyone say, ‘Let’s go to the fire station and drink beer.’ “

On Monday, May 7, at a packed meeting, the Wauneta Volunteer Fire Department board unanimously agreed to pull the kegs out of the firehouse. Vice Chief John Archer said the issue was consuming too much energy and too many resources.

Several firefighters said the fire district had already spent about $5,000 in legal fees tussling over the beer issue.

“It should save the district a bunch of money and headaches, fighting with lawyers,” said Archer.

Following the vote Sue Jarrett said, “We believe the mission was accomplished as they moved to get the alcohol out except for special events and at the approval of the board for other events.”

But the beer battle has left a lingering bad taste for many Yuma County residents who resent the Jarretts for blowing the whistle on the kegs.

Ron Graton, Executive Director of the Colorado State Fire Fighters Association said, “We feel that having alcohol in the fire station is an issue of local control. We do feel it leads to many issues that complicate the fire fighting aspect.”

Graton said having booze in the firehouse raises many questions: how is it monitored and regulated? Are members under 21 allowed in? And what funds are used to purchase alcohol?

Elway said he had to “sacrifice the short-term for the long-term” when he used a second-round pick last month on the Arizona State quarterback rather than drafting a player who could help Manning right away.

The boss of the Denver Broncos was joined by coach John Fox in an hour-long conference call with 6,000 season ticket holders Tuesday, and one caller from suburban Broomfield asked Elway for his reasoning in selecting Osweiler with the 57th overall pick.

The Hall of Fame quarterback, who rejoined the Broncos last year as vice president of football operations, replied: “It’s always tough to pick a quarterback that you know is not going to play for you for a while. But I think we have high hopes for him in the future to where once Peyton decides to hang them up that he’s the guy in waiting that can keep this (going) and we don’t miss a beat … and we can continue to compete for world championships year in and year out.”

Manning signed a five-year, $96 million deal in Denver after his release from Indianapolis. His father, Archie, has said he thinks his son is “year-to-year” after missing all of last season because of a nerve injury that caused weakness in his throwing arm.

Manning, however, has said he intends to fulfill all five years of his contract.

That would mean a long apprenticeship for Osweiler, a 21-year-old righty from Montana who stands 6-foot-8 and is working hard to fix flaws in his throwing motion to better capitalize on his height advantage.

“It’s a perfect situation where there’s not the pressure for him to come in and start right away,” Elway said. “He’s not ready for that. But he’s also going to learn from Peyton and … I think it’s a great learning experience for him to where we are set for the future.

“And he’s our guy for the future,” Elway said. “And sometimes we have to sacrifice the short-term for the long-term to grab the guy that you believe can be that next guy for you, and that’s Brock Osweiler.”

Many of the questions during the conference call, which the Broncos have been using as a way to connect with their most ardent supporters, centered on Manning and the Broncos’ revamped offense.

Manning has been working out at the team’s Dove Valley complex since offseason workouts began last month. OTAs start Monday, and that’s the first chance for media to see firsthand how the league’s only four-time MVP is throwing the football after undergoing a series of neck operations last year.

One caller told Elway he was a child when he saw him more than 25 years ago but didn’t get the autograph he’d hoped for, so Elway promised he’d sign something for him now.

Shane Burke of Fort Collins crawled up the canyon off Highway 14, but getting down was the problem.

Larimer County Search and Rescue arrived to help.

“Well I got up and couldn’t go up any further and I was tired and (couldn’t) go down,” Burke said. “So I called them and said, ‘You guys, you’ve got to help me, I don’t what I’m going to do.’ So I just held there.”

Burke didn’t have a helmet or any safety equipment, something rescuers say is never a good idea.
