Gunfire Rings Out As Deputy Serves Eviction Notice

By Kelly Werthmann

ARVADA, Colo. (CBS4) - A Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy was apparently shot at while serving an eviction in Arvada late Tuesday afternoon.

It happened just before 5 p.m. at 5955 Garrison Street, not far from the Arvada Square Shopping Center. According to the sheriff's department's Twitter page, the deputy was not hurt but the officer fired back at the suspect, who barricaded himself or herself inside the home after the exchange.

"We heard some pops and we thought it was nail guns," neighbor Tom Wambolt said, adding many homes in the area are having roofs repaired.

Arvada police responded to the neighborhood within minutes, setting up a large perimeter and closing off roads. After a brief standoff, the suspect came out of the house and was taken into custody.

Detective Dave Snelling said the suspect is being treated for non-life threatening injuries, but couldn't elaborate about whether the suspect had been shot or not.

"We didn't even know the house was being rented," Wambold told CBS4's Kelly Werthmann.

Investigators will comb through evidence gathered at the scene to determine what exactly happened and what led to the shootout.
