Police On Fatal LoDo Shooting: 'We're Doing The Best We Can'

By Melissa Garcia

DENVER, Colo. (CBS4) - An overnight shooting in Denver's LoDo neighborhood killed one man and left another in critical condition.

Shots rang out near 15th and Market streets shortly before 2 a.m.

The incident began when a fight broke out in a group of people, said Doug Schepman, a spokesman with the Denver Police Department.

"Someone in the group, a man, fired shots. Two people, two men were struck by the gunfire. One of them was pronounced deceased," said Schepman.

"(It's) very sad," said Ernie Alvarez, who has worked in Lower Downtown for 24 years. "I feel so bad for the young kids and parents that have young kids that come down here because it's just getting busier and busier, and then with that, sometimes there's more violence."

A Denver Police Department crime map shows 134 violent crimes plagued the neighborhood since 2016 alone. That includes a rival gang battle just three blocks away from where Saturday's shooting occurred. On July 30, more than 200 bullets, fired out of 18 weapons, killed a 20-year-old man and injured another, according to investigators.

No arrests had been made in that case, nor in the murder Saturday that presumably had many witnesses.

"(It's) concerning that a shooting would occur when you have a lot of people that are just getting out of bars at that time," said Schepman. "We're doing the best that we can to try to develop suspect information and try to track down the person that is responsible for this."
