Holiday Travel Causes Some Stress, But Dinner Conversation May Bring More

DENVER (CBS4) - For some Americans this Thanksgiving, political conversation at the dinner table may be even scarier than having to deal with traveling over the holiday.

For those who find themselves in gatherings with mixed political viewpoints, should the topic come up there's bound to be some added stress following the country's bitterly divisive election.

"One of my friends just informed me today of a tip: in case politics does come up, designate a room for those that want to discuss politics. And in her opinion, it should be the bathroom," said one traveler CBS4 interviewed on Wednesday at Denver International Airport. "So in that case, we will politely escort those individuals to the rest room."

Kennedy Schumacher told CBS4 at the airport there's bound to be some conflict at her holiday dinner table.

"Our grandparents are coming into town and they are forward with their ideas on this type of a thing. And actually my whole primary family is opposite of their beliefs, so I'm sure it will come up, but (it's) probably best to stay away from it," she said.

"There's more of us, so we'll outnumber them and hopefully change the subject quick with food."

On the CBS Denver Facebook page CBS4 posed the following poll question:

Are you expecting a political food fight at home on Thanksgiving Day?

The results were:

Yes, let the mashed potatoes fly! (11 percent)
We'll see who opens their mouth. (24 percent)
Nope, our mouths will be stuffed with stuffing. (46 percent)
Naw, we uninvited those folks. (19 percent)
