1 Dead In 2-Alarm Fire

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - One person was killed in a two-alarm fire that spread to surrounding homes in Aurora Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out at a home located on the 12700 block of East 7th Avenue, east of Del Mar Circle, just after 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

"There was heavy smoke and heavy fire upon arrival," said Aurora Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Tony Krenz. "It was a big fire when we arrived on scene. The smoke was so bad when we arrived on scene we couldn't even see across the street."

There were nearly 40 firefighters battling the blaze. There were about seven people living in the home at the time it caught fire.

Neighbors say a man driving by stopped to help the family inside, but was unable to save a woman that lives there.

Firefighters had to get on the roof of the small home to try to put out the blaze. A total of three homes were damaged in the fire after flames spread to neighboring homes.

"The main structure is too unsafe to go in at this time so we are spraying water from outside in. Until we get fire totally out we can't get going on investigation and a cause," said Krenz.

One person did not survive the fire and was pronounced deceased on scene. Of the four people taken to the hospital, one person was critically injured.

"Aurora firefighters pulled this person out of the fire, was not breathing, didn't have a pulse. We initiated CPR on the front lawn. At this time the person is in critical condition at the hospital," said Krenz.
