Man Convicted In Bizarre Road Rage That Left Teen Paralyzed

BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4)- An Aurora man was sentenced this week for his role in a road rage incident that left a teenager paralyzed.

Kenneth Duane Schlager was convicted Tuesday of felony criminal mischief and misdemeanor reckless endangerment for throwing a rake at a Jeep that was speeding down his neighborhood street.

Police said Schlager, 61, was raking leaves in his front yard in the 2200 block of Fulton Street when he yelled at the car to slow down. The driver, Marcus Segura, turned around and headed back to Schlager to confront him.

Schlager stood in the street holding the rake. The Jeep swerved to avoid hitting Schlager who witnesses said swung his rake "like a baseball bat" before he let it go and it shattered the windshield.

Segura, 20, lost control of the Jeep which then struck a parked vehicle and rolled. Segura's 16-year-old sister, Alexandra Galvan, a passenger in the Jeep was paralyzed in the crash.

After the crash, witnesses told police that Schlager got another rake and continued with his chores.

"He didn't call 911 or offer to help. He had no regard for the violence and destruction he left around him," said 17th Judicial Deputy District Attorney Rayna Gokli.

The speed limit on the street was 25 mph. Police said the Jeep was traveling 36 mph.

Schlager will be sentenced at 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 5, 2017 in Adams County Court.
