Police Investigate Suspicious Backpack At King Soopers

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Longmont investigated a suspicious package found outside a King Soopers store on Friday afternoon that turned out to be a high school student's backpack.

The backpack was found outside the grocery store on South Hover Street just before 1:30 p.m.

Copter4 flew over the store where officers had blocked off the area near the front doors with crime scene tape. That's where the backpack was found.

The bomb squad responded to the store and sent out a robot to investigate. The store was evacuated and people were asked to leave the parking lot.

Longmont Police Deputy Chief Jeff Satur told CBS4 that the situation was a misunderstanding over a backpack.

Satur said that someone dropped off a backpack for his friend at the front of the store. When someone else spotted the unattended backpack near the entrance to the store, they called police.

Satur said that person did the right thing by calling authorities.

Officers initially urged the public to avoid the area and the parking lot was cordoned off.

The high school student eventually showed up to claim his backpack. The bomb squad X-rayed the backpack as a precaution and nothing suspicious was found inside.

The store and parking lot were reopened just before 3 p.m. Friday.
