Vehicle Break-Ins Becoming A Big Problem At Trailheads & Parks
DOUGLAS COUNTY (CBS4) - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning for people leaving their cars unlocked around popular trailheads and parks.
Vehicle break-ins are on the rise in Douglas County, in areas many may not expect, including parking lots of parks and trailheads like the Glendale Farm Open Space.
"It's kind of surprising to me that someone can get into a car without getting noticed," said Adrian Benham.
Since July, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office says thieves have been targeting easy to carry items from unlocked cars in Highlands Ranch, Parker, Roxborough, and Castle Rock.
Dawn Besocke admits she often leaves her car unlocked, and doesn't always keep her valuables out of sight.
"I take advantage of the tinted windows," said Besocke. "It's probably not a deterrent in any way, shape, or form."
Benham says he tends to be a little more careful.
"I never lock my car at night, but when I come to a public spot I do," said Benham.
While park visitors say new warning signs serve as a good reminder, Benham says they need to be put into practice.
"It's just a necessary precaution," Benham said. "If you get back to your car, and your things are gone, and you didn't lock it, that's kind of your own fault."
Some of the items being taken from vehicles includes small, easy to carry items like cellphones, purses, wallets, and even garage door openers.
