Deadly Shooting Shocks Neighborhood

By Melissa Garcia

DENVER (CBS4) - Police in Denver were called to a homicide investigation after an early morning shooting on Sunday.

Officers rushed to the home in the 100 block of South Knox Court near West Cedar Avenue shortly after midnight Sunday on reports of a shooting.

When they arrived, one man was found dead and another male rushed to the hospital in critical condition. There was no sign of a suspect or suspects.

Police tweeted an update on the homicide investigation.

On Sunday afternoon, police had not released any suspect description, nor could they comment on how many suspects they may be looking for.

CBS4's Melissa Garcia talked with one witness who heard arguing, followed by gunshots.

"All of a sudden I heard a shooting," said Arcelia Pacheco, a neighbor across the alley from where the shots rang out. "And I heard like five or six gunshots. Like 'Bam, bam, bam,'" said Pacheco. "I went outside and looked and I saw a guy running through the alley."

Investigators worked throughout the day collecting evidence.

Vergil DeHererra was saddened to learn that someone had died such a violent death at the home of his neighbor.

He hoped that the shooter(s) would be caught soon.

"I hope they get those people and make them pay for what they did," DeHererra said.

After spending 20 years residing in a neighborhood that neighbors said used to be calm and peaceful, Pacheco was thinking of moving somewhere else.

"It's scary and makes you think about ... it's time probably to move on. So, it's sad to leave our neighborhood, but that's the way it is," Pacheco said.

Police said that investigators were talking to witnesses to try and piece together what led up to the shooting.

"The information we have right now is still very brief at this point … that the suspect stormed their way into the home," Cmdr. Barb Archer said.

They also planned to interview the surviving victim, depending on the progress of his condition.

Neither victim has been identified.
