Shots Fired At Uber Driver In Apparently Random Incident

DENVER (CBS4) - An Uber driver says two people pulled up next to him overnight and began firing shots at his car for no apparent reason. A chase that followed led from the Denver metro area into Weld County.

The incident started early Friday morning and two people are in custody. No one was hurt.

The shots were fired near Interstate 25 and 20th in downtown Denver and the chase that ensued crossed county lines. Police from Northglenn and Thornton were involved, along with the Colorado State Patrol. The chase finally ended near the town of Frederick.

Police placed stop sticks on the interstate near the Highway 52 exit, and the suspects' car was stopped.

The Uber driver, who asked that his name not be used, told CBS4 he feared for his life during the course of the events. The bullets that were fired shattered some of his car's windows, and he immediately began chasing after the suspects, who drove off quickly.

"It's kind of scary, but at the same time I have to keep on going," said Uber driver Kenneth, who has been driving with the company for less than a year. "It seems like the later it gets, the more crazy people come out."

The Uber driver said the suspects threw things out of their windows in an effort to get him off their trail, including children's toys.

At one point the suspects increased their speed to 130 mph and he couldn't keep up. By that point, police were already on the trail of the suspects, too.

The name of the two suspects has not been released. A FedEx driver also fell victim to the stopsticks. He told CBS4 that a man and a woman were taken into custody.

Kenneth said the news of the shooting will keep him alert, but not keep him from earning a living.

"I can't get scared and not drive anymore because that's how I make my living," said Kenneth.

In a statement to CBS4, Uber said:

"We are thankful no one was injured and appreciate the local police and the Colorado State Patrol for their quick response and action to make an arrest."

The suspects have not been identified.

Denver Police believe road rage may have played a factor in the shooting.
