Some Residents Want To Sink Golfing Venue Like A 3-Foot Putt

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4) - A new Topgolf driving range could be coming to Interstate 25 and 136th Avenue in Thornton, but not everyone is on board.

"They don't like it at all," said Mark Nameh, a resident who lives close to the proposed project's site. "I know three neighbors on this street here who are moving because Topgolf is coming."

Nameh says his neighbors are less than thrilled about the golf entertainment complex coming to town. Noise and traffic concerns are at the top of his list.

But Julie Jacoby, Retail Administrator for the City of Thornton, says a new Topgolf would only add to residents' quality of life.

"We've requested quite a bit of information, everything from sound studies, to traffic studies, to lighting studies," Jacoby said. "Topgolf has met all of the requirements that the city would require on a site such as this."

Jacoby says the last step would be a final vote from the city council. The new Thornton location would be the second in the state. Jacoby says the Centennial Topgolf is one of the most popular locations in the country.

A video on Topgolf's website highlights what residents can expect from the 64,000 square foot, three-story driving range, including restaurants, lounges, and outdoor entertainment.

Nameh says information from a community meeting held a few weeks ago didn't sit well with most residents.

While the City of Thornton says council members will take public comments into consideration, Nameh says he's not so sure.

"It seems like the city already approved everything," said Nameh. "I don't know if their voice is going to make any difference."

Residents are invited to express their excitement or concerns over the proposed Topgolf location at a public community hearing on Aug. 23 at City Hall.
