House Fire Likely Caused By Cigarette

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4)- Fire investigators are working to figure out what started a house fire in Lakewood but believe cigarettes may be the cause. The fire destroyed the home and one person is in the hospital suffering from burns.

The fire broke out at a home located on West Mexico Avenue near South Union Boulevard Tuesday afternoon.

The fire spilled out of the home and burned two cars parked in the driveway.

Firefighters have considered that the ignition point for the fire could have been a burning cigarette in a couch that was in the garage.

Four people were in the home when the fire broke out. Two people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries for smoke inhalation. One person suffered burns in the fire and remains hospitalized.

Meg Porter lives across the street from the home and called 911 when she saw flames.

"All of a sudden after that, and I mean seconds after that, it burst into huge flames," said Porter.

The smoke was very thick and firefighters had to use flashlights in the middle of the day because their visibility was impaired.

The flames were so large that neighbors were scared the fire would spread to their homes.

"I was just terrified because I was worried that people were going to die in there," said neighbor Lauren Heath.

Firefighters found the family dog hiding under a bed in the basement but the dog did not survive. The home was destroyed in the fire.

A GoFundMe page has been established to help the family after all their belongings were destroyed.
