I-70 Open Through Glenwood Canyon After Rockfall Mitigation

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - All lanes of Interstate 70 have reopened through Glenwood Canyon after scheduled rockfall mitigation work was cancelled.

All lanes of I-70 were closed on Wednesday morning while crews worked to prevent future rockfalls. Challenging downdrafts made it difficult for helicopter crews to complete the project.

Work was initially scheduled to continue on Thursday with all lanes closed in the canyon but the Colorado Department of Transportation postponed the closure.

"Future closures in the canyon will now be scheduled to complete the necessary rockfall fencing work.  Motorists will want to visit the Colorado Department of Transportation website, www.COTRIP.org for future dates," said Mike Fowler, CDOT Project Engineer, in a statement.

Future canyon closures will be planned during the lower traffic volumes in Glenwood Canyon on either a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
