4-Car Chase Ends With Crash Into Tree, 1 Shot

DENVER (CBS4) - Portions of Colfax Avenue and Speer Boulevard were shut down Wednesday morning after a chase ended with a crash in the intersection.

Police responded to the four-car crash that shut down westbound Colfax Avenue about 4 a.m.

A white minivan came to rest in the middle of Speer Boulevard after hitting and knocking down a tree. One person was shot and transported to the hospital alive, but in unknown condition. Another was also rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say it was the man in the minivan who was shot, who then crawled out of the damaged vehicle and threw his gun, which investigators retrieved.

Multiple witnesses were on scene, and one said he heard multiple gunshots. Another, an Uber driver, said he was sideswiped in the incident.

"I heard the tires dragging. I looked in my mirror and I didn't see anything until the van hit me and crossed here and took out two trees, and two other cars were chasing him. I didn't see anybody, I was shaken. I'm from Detroit, I'm used to a little bit of that but it is a little unnerving," said Lawrence Schaub.

The intersection remained closed until 7:30 a.m. as police placed markers where witnesses saw the chase occur. Traffic investigators were on scene as well.

Shortly before 6:30 a.m., a man who had been on scene was cuffed and placed in a police cruiser. He was a witness providing information, but proved to have an outstanding warrant.

Denver police are looking to talk to any witnesses to the complicated scene. They say some of the people involved are not cooperating in the investigation.
