Friends, Family Gather To Remember Boy Shot & Killed In Home

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- Friends and family gathered for a memorial on Monday night to remember a boy who was shot and killed in his home.

Police responded to the Nordic Arms Apartments at the intersection of Galena Street and East Colfax Avenue at 9:45 p.m. Friday. Authorities said they found Anthony "Jemel" Hemmings-Taylor suffering from the injury inside an apartment on the first floor of the building. The officers were unable to save the boy.

Friends and family gathered at the City of Aurora MLK Library located at 9898 East Colfax Avenue on Monday evening. Following the vigil there was a march to the area East 16th Avenue and North Galena Street in Aurora.

Chief of Police Nick Metz and other representatives from the Aurora Police Department were there and reminded people the importance of keeping guns away from children.

"If you're going to have a gun, we really encourage you to practice responsible gun ownership and part of that includes making sure your guns are locked up so one, that your kids can't get to them but also so that in case your house is burglarized that your gun isn't stolen and used on the streets later," said Metz.

The family says the shooting was an accident but police have yet to comment on the investigation.
