Elway After Broncos Many Offseason Moves: 'We Feel Good About Where We Are'

CBS4's Eric Christensen interviewed Broncos general manager John Elway last week while he was competing as an amateur in the CoBank Colorado Open Championships at Green Valley Golf Club. The following is a transcript of the conversation.

Eric Christensen: When you tee it up in a tourney like this do you have a goal in mind? Are you trying to win low amateur title?

John Elway: Yeah, I guess. What I try to do is play my best and compete. I enjoy doing that. There are a lot of good players out here and it's fun to be in these situations. I want to play well. When I don't it bothers me. Hopefully we'll play better tomorrow.

Note: Elway finished second among amateurs in the Open.

Christensen: You've been a familiar face at this tournament over the years. What keeps bringing you back?

Elway: Yeah it really is (familiar). It's the golf course, Pat Hamill does a great job with the golf course, plus the competitive nature of it.

Christensen: Do you ever regret not going to the White House the first time around, and what are you most looking forward to?

Elway: I've been to the White House before. I had some medical issues the first time so I'm looking forward to going. Good for players and people who haven't been before. It will be a great experience for everybody.

Christensen: A lot of eyes this spring have been on the quarterback competition. It's not often a Super Bowl champion has a 3-way QB competition heading into the next season. It's truly a case where the best guy will win the job?

Elway: It is. I think they've all played well. It's been a good spring. It's a great competition and it will make them all better.

Christensen: Many people are surprised that Trevor Siemian is part of that competition, what is it about him that you and Gary (Kubiak) like?

Elway: Trevor didn't get a lot of attention last year. Anytime you have No. 18 on your roster, the other guys don't get attention. Trevor was unknown because he had a knee injury in college and missed the last half of the season. Trevor is a talented guy who is athletic and smart and can play in this system. It doesn't surprise us that he's battling away.

Christensen: The pundits don't think the Broncos can repeat this season. You were on a team that repeated. What are some of the challenges and pitfalls that face this team and what do they need to do to avoid them?

Elway: It's hard to repeat because everybody is shooting for you. You get everybody's best effort. It's hard to repeat and that's why it doesn't happen a lot. I think bottom line our guys believe in what they can do and what (they need to do) to get it done. All the pundits can talk all they want about it now in offseason. We lost a couple good football players on defensive side but we feel like we've replaced them, we'll get better on offensive side. We feel good about where we are but the bottom line is we'll go tee it up and see where we end up.
