John Elway Says He Got Food Poisoning Last Time He Visited White House

DENVER (CBS4) - When somebody tells you they got food poisoning most people's initial thoughts are 'wow, that's awful' followed immediately by 'what kind of dump did you eat at that gave you food poisoning?'

In the case of Broncos executive vice president and general manager John Elway, the answer to the latter question would be, 'the White House,' according to an interview Elway gave to the Colorado Springs Gazette.

The last time Elway made it to the White House -- which was actually in 1989 before a Broncos-Redskins game in our nation's capital, since Elway didn't make it to the White House for the Broncos' back-to-back championships -- the Broncos QB was served chipped beef on toast and it made him so sick that he ended up missing the game against Washington.

Needless to say, Elway hasn't had chipped beef on toast since that fateful day.

Thankfully, the Broncos still managed to win the game 14-10 and they did it thanks to another familiar face at quarterback: current Broncos coach Gary Kubiak.

From The Colorado Springs Gazette:

"[Running back Steve] Sewell was the backup quarterback. He didn't work out very well in warmups," Elway said. "I'm lying on the table and they've got a little TV with a coat hanger stuck in as the antenna. I didn't care who won or who lost. All I cared was that Gary got up every time."

Here's hoping things end better for Elway after this White House visit.

Bryan Altman is, for some reason, an unabashed fan of the Rangers, Jets and Mets. If he absolutely had to pick a basketball team it would be the Knicks, but he'd gladly trade them for just one championship for any of his other three teams.
