Foster Homes Needed For Dogs Displaced By Texas Floods

By Andrea Flores

DENVER (CBS4) - More than a dozen dogs who escaped dangerous floodwaters in Texas have the new challenge of finding a forever home in Colorado.

HomeComings Dog Rescue, a Denver nonprofit, is asking for pet lovers around the Denver metro area to extend their hearts and homes to dogs in need.

It's been a "ruff" journey for 17 pups from the Lone Star State.

They traveled all the way from Breckenridge, Texas, where they were displaced from overcrowded shelters in an area hit hard by recent flooding.

"They are usually inundated with dogs, and now with the flooding, it has become urgent," said HomeComings Dog Rescue Executive Director Deborah Hill.

The day-long journey from Texas ended at the PetSmart off Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood Friday night, where foster parents, like Mary Whalen, anxiously waited for their new four-legged friends.

"I recently lost my dog, and have some space in my house, so I thought I'd open it up to help," Whalen said.

HomeComings helps find foster homes for dogs in need, and Hill says getting them into a temporary home away from home is the first step in finding a forever family.

"We are short on fosters and some of our dogs that are coming tonight are going to have to go into boarding," said Hill.

Hill started a HomeComings GoFundMe page in hope of raising money for a trip back to Texas in the coming days to rescue dogs, displaced by flooding, she says have nowhere else to go.

The dogs will be made available for adoption at weekly adoption events each Saturday at the Lakewood PetSmart at 160 Wadsworth, and the Glendale PetSmart at 4300 E. Alameda from 11:00 a.m.to 2:00 p.m.

They nonprofit is also asking for gently used crates, dog bowls, food and blanket donations to be dropped off at both PetSmart adoption locations.

Adoption costs range between $150-350 depending on the dog's age.
