Toxicology Results May Give Clues To What Caused Series Of Crashes In Thornton

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4)- Investigators are waiting on toxicology reports to determine what, if any, criminal charges will be filed in a bizarre series of crashes that involved more than a dozen vehicles earlier this week.

There were 14 vehicles involved in the crashes that stretched from Thornton to Northglenn just before the evening commute on Monday.

Investigators believe a medical episode may be to blame for the damage but charges may depend on on the toxicology results for the driver at the center of it all. It could take a couple of weeks for those results.

Police said the adult female, not identified, was driving eastbound on 104th Avenue sideswiped four vehicles and rear-ended a silver Cadillac Escalade as she approached Washington Street just before 4 p.m. Monday.

The owner of the Escalade got out of her vehicle to look at the damage and the driver who caused the other crashes got into that SUV and drove away northbound on Washington Street, striking several more vehicles.

Northglenn Police took the suspect driver into custody near Washington Street and Malley Drive.

Witnesses say shortly after striking the second set of vehicles, the stolen SUV stopped running. That's when the suspect tried to run away but officers caught up to her and took her into custody. She was later transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation.
