Lakewood Man Convicted Of Attempted Murder For Shooting Officers
GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4)- A Lakewood man has been convicted of attempted murder in a suicide-by-cop attempt nearly two years ago.
Gordon Lee Moench was found guilty by a jury in Jefferson County earlier this week.
Moench admits he fired shots at Lakewood officers Jonathan Key and Kimberly Collins from the back of his pickup truck when they approached his home following a domestic disturbance report on July 5, 2014. Key was struck in the chest and arm while he was in his cruiser. Collins was hit in the leg as she approached Moench's house on foot. Both were wearing bullet-proof vests and survived.
"They're going to have to kill me," Gordon Moench told a police dispatcher after he wounded the officers and then added he "has to die now."
A third officer then wounded Moench with a shotgun while the suspect was walking down the middle of his street.
On the day of the shooting, Moench and his stepson and wife were fighting. Moench's wife claims that he said there was going to be a battle, and that he had access to several guns, including two rifles, a 40-caliber revolver, a 9mm pistol and a .357 revolver.
Moench is scheduled to be sentenced in June.
