Von Miller On Stadium Naming Rights: 'That's A Tough One'

DENVER (CBS4)- Lawmakers want to make sure the stadium where the Denver Broncos play never loses its "Mile High" name but one fairly accomplished Broncos player isn't sure about what should happen.

There is a good chance the naming rights to the stadium, now known as Sports Authority Field at Mile High, will change. The details of Sports Authority's decision to liquidate were revealed during a U.S. bankruptcy court hearing on Tuesday. The Englewood-based retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month.

Broncos fans are in agreement there is only one name for the stadium, "It doesn't matter what they call it, it will always be Mile High."

"I would love to see it be Mile High Stadium, that's just part of the tradition."

Under the new bill any corporation who wants to invest in naming rights to the stadium would be required to include "Mile High" in the name just as Sports Authority did with Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

The stadium opened in 2001 after the demolition of the old Mile High Stadium.

Fans were outraged when the team sold the naming rights to the current stadium when it was built 15 years ago. Now they believe it's time to make things right.

"It's kind of disappointing, they've changed the name so many times already, I hope they get a good name."

What's in a name earns the team $6 million a year. Some fans hope the new corporate name can mean something to them.

"Coors Field works... maybe you could just do Mile High at Coors or something like that," said one fan.

Super Bowl MVP Von Miller doesn't know what to think of the name, "I don't know... I just, that's a tough one."

But he also says it's not really what's on the outside of the stadium that's important but what happens inside, "Sports Authority Field at Mile High, that's a bit of a mouthful. You got me stumped. As long as we kill quarterbacks it doesn't matter what you call it."

Several companies are hoping to be in line to get their name on the stadium where the Super Bowl Champions play. The stadium district said they haven't been contacted by new sponsors.
