Redshirt Freshman QB Steven Montez Featured At Buffs Spring Game

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - Colorado Buffaloes fans received some disturbing news Saturday morning. Davis Webb, a quarterback from Texas Tech who is supposed to transfer to CU in the summer, took a visit to the University of California this weekend.

Head coach Mike MacIntyre said he spoke with Webb Friday night and Webb assured him he's still coming to Boulder.

It certainly makes the quarterback competition at CU more interesting. If Webb doesn't come and Sefo Liufau's foot doesn't heal and he can't play, who will be the quarterback?

At Saturday's spring game fans got a look at redshirt freshman Steven Montez. He's a big, strong, athletic player who looks the part but just lacks the experience. He had a golden opportunity this spring working with the first team offense and all reports are that Montez took a big leap forward.

"He got a lot of confidence in the team too. You know that's a big part of being quarterback. And he made a lot of plays in practice. He made some plays out here today and he had some tough plays. But that's the case. You want to get him out here on the field … uniform on, crowd and everything," MacIntyre said. "I've been pleased with Steven. You can see that he's athletic and he can throw; he's got a big arm."

"I need to get more experience with the speed, and that will just come with our summer workouts ... and that kind of stuff," Montez said. "Just taking those reps and taking full advantage of those reps."

Montez told CBS4's Eric Christensen that if he had to be thrown into the starting quarterback roll in the fall he'd be ready to go.
