Denver Police Investigating Fatal Shooting In Alley Near West Nevada Place

By Matt Kroschel

DENVER (CBS4) - Police in Denver are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon.

According to police, the shooting happened just after 12:30 p.m. in an alley running in the 3200 block of West Nevada Place.

Jesus Cadena, a clerk working in a nearby grocery store, told CBS4 two men were fighting in the alley behind the store. That's when Cadena says a single shot was fired. Cadena called 911 while other bystanders ran to help the man who was shot in the chest.

"I'm turning the corner and I just hear a pop and I see a body on the ground," Cadena said. "We're on the phone with 911 trying to figure out what we should do, like what the right procedure is. We turn him around and saw the hole in his chest bleeding."

Police investigators had the alley between some apartments and the back of a row of businesses taped off with crime tape. A motorcycle was in the center of the area where witnesses say the shooting happened.

Police say the suspect took off running and they don't have a good description to go off yet.

The victim in his 40s died at the hospital. His name has not been released.

"We're still trying to understand the circumstances that led up to this, but at this time we don't know if the suspect and the victim knew each other or why the shooting did occur," police spokesman Doug Schepman said.
