Thornton Police Officer Shot, Suspect Killed

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4) - A Thornton police officer was shot early Wednesday morning and the suspect was shot and killed. The police officer was released from the hospital just hours after being shot.

It all started about 12:50 a.m. when a Thornton police officer saw a vehicle with no lights on turn into the RTD parking lot at 8703 N. Grant St. The officer approached the vehicle and made contact with the driver.

As the officer returned to his vehicle and was sitting inside when the suspect exited his vehicle and shot the officer with a shotgun. The officer returned fire when the suspect got back into his vehicle and sped away.

The officer, who had been shot, pursued the vehicle southbound on Grant Street. Two other officers joined the pursuit.

The suspect stopped his vehicle in the 8600 block of Grant Street, got out and walked toward officers with the shotgun. Gunfire was exchanged with the suspect. No other officers were injured.

The suspect was shot and killed. No other suspects are involved.

The wounded police officer is a more than 30-year police veteran. He was rushed to the hospital with multiple wounds but was released Wednesday morning. The officer has not been identified.
