Pit Bulls Attack Adams County Deputy, Dog Killed

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Two pit bulls attacked an Adams County Sheriff's deputy on Thursday afternoon while they were checking out some suspicious activity at a home. The deputy shot and killed one dog.

Deputies responded to 520 Bronco Road just before 1 p.m. Thursday on reports of suspicious activity in the back yard.

When deputies arrived, they began checking the yard but as one deputy approached a shed, two large pit bull dogs exited and advanced toward the deputy.

"I saw the officer open the door and that's when the sheriff got bitten," said Kelly, a neighbor who watched it happen. "They almost bit me and my dad here in the backyard."

The deputy retreated to the fence area where one of the dogs bit him on his elbow. The deputy fired his service weapon and struck the dog because he feared for his safety.

Adams County Animal Control officers were called and took control of both dogs. The dog that was shot died from his injuries.

"They were mean dogs they almost attacked me and my dad the other night. We were out here drinking a can of beer and they came under this fence and tried to attack me," said Kelly.

The deputy was rushed to the hospital where he was treated. The deputy is expected to be okay and will return to work for his next shift.

No one was home where the dogs attacked because of a fire at the residence on Wednesday.

During the investigation it was revealed that at least two neighbors had been bitten in the last week by the same dogs. Adams County Animal Control is investigating the incident and possible charges for the dog's owner.

The dog's owner told CBS4 he had no comment on the situation.
