Arenado Hitting Nearly .600, Weiss Not Worried About 'Peaking'
GLENDALE, Ariz. (CBS4) - Yes, it's early and it doesn't count, but look who's leading the majors in batting average in spring training -- Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado.
Arenado went 2-for-3 in Wednesday's 7-3 loss to the Dodgers and boosted his average to a scorching .593, which is 28 points ahead of second place Daniel Nava of the Angels.
Arenado is 16-27 in spring training with 2 home runs, 3 doubles and 9 RBIs. His slugging percentage is an astronomical .926.
Manager Walt Weiss isn't worried that maybe the 24-year-old is peaking too soon -- before the season begins.
"You always want to peak at the right time, but Nolan's good all the time," Weiss said.
The Rockies are 8-7 in Cactus League play. The team hosts the Angels in Scottsdale Thursday afternoon.
The Rockies don't have to go far to start the regular season. They open with the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix April 4.
The home opener at Coors Field is Friday, April 8 at 2:10 p.m. against the San Diego Padres.
