Police Prepare To Remove Homeless Belongings From Sidewalks

DENVER (CBS4)- Police in Denver prepared to remove belongings and shelter of people living on the streets in one area of downtown on Tuesday. Protesters held signs in opposition to the move.

The makeshift homeless camps have popped up in the area of Lawrence Street and Park Avenue West near the Denver Rescue Mission. On Tuesday, most of those camps and shelters had been cleared out.

Warnings were posted in the area on Monday warning those living on the streets that setting up camps on public property is not allowed.

Once the flyers were posted, the belongings must be moved in 24 hours. If the tarps, grocery carts, clothing and bins are not gone by Tuesday, the city will remove them. The belongings will be stored for 30 days and if no one comes to claim them, the items will be destroyed.

The City of Denver said the camps have grown so large there are concerns about health and safety.

Police were in the area giving verbal warnings while some protesters stood by with signs that read "Criminalize Poverty? Wrong Priority!"
