Try Speed Dating And Enjoy A Night At The Opera

DENVER (CBS4) - It's a new spin on an old classic just in time for Valentine's Day -- a night at the opera is being combined with speed dating.

It's an immersive new opera that focuses on a speed dating session.

"So when you come in an as audience member you don't know who is a performer and who is an audience member," Andres Cladera with Emerald City Opera said.

It's a modern performance piece that directors call beautifully written, performed -- and funny.

"I think that opera needs more comedy," Cladera said.

For the first time it's coming to the Washington Park Center for Music and Arts for singles and non-singles alike.

"It's sort of what is happening now in the opera world," Cladera said.

While opera carries its own reputation, director Erica Olden hopes that the modern day spin on the classic will bring in new lovers of the famed art form.

"We are still making opera in the year 2016 and we need to get young people to come and enjoy the opera," Olden said.

At the end of the performance directors hope audience members will come away with not only a new appreciation, but maybe even a date.

Speed Dating Tonight premieres at the Washington Park Center for Music and Arts this Thursday at 8 p.m.
