Castle Rock Star Shines For Broncos

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) - Castle Rock's star will glow with Broncos pride all night until Super Bowl 50.

The town's firefighters, who maintain the historic star, changed the 88 bulbs to blue and orange.

"We know our community rallies around our signature rock, our star, and the Broncos," said Castle Rock Fire Chief Art Morales. "This is one of those rare occasions when all three come together."

Only a few other times outside of the holiday season has the star been illuminated. Two of those were also when the Broncos played in the Super Bowl: in 1998 and again in 2014.

Following World War II, the star was lit up with a "V" for victory.

In the 1930s, during the Great Depression, hope came in the shape of a star. To lure travelers to stop for goods and services, Castle Rock's firefighters volunteered to carry the construction materials to the top of the iconic rock. There it was built, and there it has stood since.

The star stands 40 feet high and contains 88 light bulbs. It is controlled by a sensor and lights up each night near sunset, traditionally glowing from the Saturday before Thanksgiving until the last day of the National Western Stock Show.
