17-Year-Old Identified As Suspect In Chopping Down Memorial Trees

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4)- A teenager has been identified as the suspect wanted for chopping down a memorial tree.

Police in Longmont said a student helped identify the suspect. Investigators say the teenager confessed and will pay for the crime by enrolling in the Longmont Community Justice Partnership.

A weeping willow tree was planted in the Prospect neighborhood after the a couple was murdered in 2010. Sean and Staci Griffin owned Boulder Stove and Flooring and were gunned down by a disgruntled employee in the back room of their business.

The tree was cut down last month and the community raised money to replace it. But that replacement tree was cut down.

Police believe the teen cut down both trees but don't have a motive.
