Aurora Police Hope Con Man's Voice Leads To Arrest

By Karen Morfitt

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- Aurora police are asking for the public's help in identifying a con man by his voice.

According to investigators an unknown male subject called the victim and identified himself as "Donald Patton" with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. He told the victim that a warrant had been issued for her arrest. In a previous case the suspect identified himself as "Deputy Michael Scott with Arapahoe County."

"He sounds all official, lists a bunch of different charges that these warrants are for. He then informs our victim to either get an electronic transfer or some type of gift card," said Sgt. Chris Amsler with the Aurora Police Department.

The scammer then gives the victims a return number to call where they can leave information on how he can obtain the funds.

The return number in one of the cases goes to voicemail and investigators hope someone will hear the man's voice and help identify the suspect.

"Sometimes criminals will go to great lengths to do what they can to steal people's money from them," Amsler said.

Thankfully police say the victims became suspicious. When they investigated the call, victims learned it was not legit and then reported it to police.

Anyone who recognizes the man's voice is asked to call Detective Sergeant Dan Courtenay with the Economic Crimes Unit at 303-739-6094.
