Local Contemporary Ballet Company Holds Open Rehearsals

DENVER (CBS4) - One of the great aspects of Denver Arts Week is that you can find some fun cultural gems that you may not have known about before.

"Arts Week anywhere in this country, in any city is crucial. It's crucial because it's a moment where it is, kind of, everywhere that the arts are really important. And it provides a platform for people to engage in the arts who may think they don't like the arts," said Dawn Fay, producing director for Wonderbound.

Wonderbound is a professional contemporary ballet company in Denver. It's been around for about 13 years, although only under the Wonderbound name since 2012. The company does work with seniors through a program called Project Generations, offering immersive dance experiences at four assisted living facilities and one Alzheimer's unit.  The organization also works with at-risk youth in as many as 35 schools across Denver, Jefferson County and Adams County. The dancers reach out to about 20,000 students a year.

Wonderbound rehearses in a building at 1075 Park Avenue West. The building used to be an old post office garage. Now it houses a huge dance floor with couches and chairs. The company invites the public to come and be a part of their rehearsal process.

"Open rehearsals are a really good way to engage people in the creative process because a lot of people think very different things about how what we do is created," Fay explained.

The company rehearses Tuesday through Friday from 11:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 11:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
