Running Groups Help Support Marathon Training

WESTMINSTER, Colo (CBS4) - Nearly 15,000 runners will turn out for the Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon. For many of them, crossing the finish line will be a huge accomplishment. It's the payoff for a lot of hard work, and many found support from running groups.

Runner's Edge of The Rockies meets early Saturday mornings at various locations around the Denver metro area. Members stretch and stand around sharing stories and support before they head out on their run. Every week there is a well-marked course of various distances, several support stations with water and Gatorade, and the comradery of a common goal.

"They make it fun and easy," said Kim Blanchett, who has been running since 2011.

Blanchett is training to run 26.2 miles at the Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon. This will be her third marathon.

"The last, like, 5 or 6 miles, you're wondering why you ever signed up and then when you finish you wonder when you're going to sign up again," Blanchett told CBS4.

She says that training with a running group makes all the difference when it comes to motivation.

"Just having lots of people to run with and challenge you," Blanchett said.

A running group is also a good way to push your limits and learn how to run longer distances.

"I'd done several half (marathons) and at some point I was on a training run and I think I was on a runners' high and I said, 'Hey, why not do the full.' So here we are," said Suzanne with a laugh.

The Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon will be her first 26.2 mile course. Suzanne says she knew how to run a half marathon but wasn't sure of the best strategies for running the full marathon. That's why she joined Runner's Edge of The Rockies.

"Every week I get out here and just keep building up the miles. I think I'll be ready for October," Suzanne told CBS4.

The Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon & ½ is coming up Sunday, Oct. 18.
