Family Of 6 Reeling After Thieves Steal Both Their Cars

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (CBS4) - A Centennial family is left to figure out how to get around after not one, but two of their vehicles were stolen.

"I don't think anyone expects to have one car stolen let alone both in the same night," Lacey Quilhot said.

Lacey and her husband Mike say reliable transporation is a must when it comes to raising their four children.

Last Monday they learned from Arapahoe County deputies that both their suv and minivan were missing.

"They wanted to know who had it out for us," Mike Quilhot said jokingly.

The thieves took both the vehicles from parked under a carport in front of the family's apartment building. Lacey says they didn't know they were gone until deputies came knocking on their door.

"A bunch of the car seats and things we had in both the vehicles were dumped on the side of Parker Road and then they left the registration card for the van sitting with it," she said.

With both vehicles gone, they were left to figure out how to get around.

"We have four kids. I drive them to and from school every day. We drive to dance five days a week. We drive to baseball, we drive to cub scouts," Lacey said.

They are also going back and forth to doctors appointments which are vital to their daughter.

So Lacey says news that the van had been recovered came as a relief.

"In that phone call I was told there was just minor damage to it and that it was driveable."

It turns out it was involved in a hit and run in Denver and the damage couldn't be repaired.

The family, for now, is borrowing a car from family and friends and have started a fund to help them replace one of those they lost.

"It has been a very humbling experience for us to have to stand back and let people give. That's a big thing," Mike said.

As unexpected as it was, the Quilhots say they're thankful that they have each other. They're also hopeful that whomever is responsible will be found.

"I hope they see that and feel a little guilt ... and maybe choose to do the right thing," Lacey said.

The Quilhots owned both the cars and thought liablility coverage would be enough to get by.

They hope that people can learn from their mistakes and are urging everyone to get the protection they need because this they say can happen to anyone.
