Breast Cancer Survivor Says Running Is Proof She's Beating Cancer

DENVER (CBS4) - Every runner at the Rock 'n' Roll Denver Half Marathon will have a personal reason to run. One runner says that crossing the finish line is proof that she's beating cancer.

"Every time I cross the finish line, no matter the distance I run, I am empowered. It makes me stronger, it makes me a fighter. It says, 'There is nothing I can't do,'" said Saundra Robinson, 60, a breast cancer survivor.

There is nothing that Robinson can't do. She's crossed the finish line in dozens of marathons. Right now she's training for the Rock 'n' Roll Denver Half Marathon.

"It says, 'I'm beating cancer.' Everyday … with every step … 'I'm beating cancer,'" Robinson told CBS4.

Robinson got the diagnosis in 2006 after a routine mammogram.

"Mine was found microscopically. We were able to treat it aggressively and pray that it's gone forever," Robinson explained.

She went through a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Now she's a driving force behind fundraising and research, and an advocate for regular mammograms.

"Early detection saves lives. It's extremely important that you know your family history, that you know your breast tissue so you can self-advocate, and do regular checks," Robinson explained.

There was a time when Robinson thought she might not run again. Now she dedicates every mile to making a difference.

"To be a survivor, I can tell my story," Robinson said.

There is still time to register for the Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon. The marathon, ½ marathon, relay, 10K and 5K will be on Sunday, Oct. 18.
