'Sexting' Popular Among Adults, According To New Survey

DENVER (CBS4) - While much attention has been put on the "sexting" habits of teens, a new study reveals the popularity of sexting among adults.

Researchers from Drexel University surveyed 870 adults between the ages of 18 and 82 about whether they send or receive sexy text messages, the motives behind it, and the effect on their relationship and sexual satisfaction, said CBS News.

The results showed that 88% of respondents said they had sent a sexual message at least once before, and 82% had done it in the past year.

About 75% said they've done so while in a committed relationship, about 43% in a casual one, said a CBS affiliate.

It was found that men send sexual text messages more often than women.

The numbers may seem high, and it's true that some variables may have skewed the responses.

First, the survey was done online, meaning adults who are not technologically savvy would not have participated. Also, the term "sexting" may mean different things to different people.

Though sexting can have negative consequences when it comes to privacy and security issues -- as digital material can be saved, sent, and last indefinitely -- the study highlights some of the positives.

Researchers found that higher levels of sexting were associated with greater sexual satisfaction, particularly for committed couples.
