Stabbing Incident Leads To Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting

DENVER (CBS4) - Police in Denver are investigating after an officer-involved shooting left one person dead in southwest Denver.

The shooting occurred just before 8 p.m. Sunday in the 4500 block of Morrison Road near West Kentucky Avenue.

Denver police say it started with a stabbing incident between the suspect, identified as Paul Castaway, 35, and his mother. The mother was not seriously injured, but the scene escalated when Castaway approached officers dangerously close with a weapon.

One officer fired several shots. Castaway was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Denver police said Castaway died shortly after 2:30 a.m. Monday.

The initial stabbing did not lead to serious injuries, and the mother is now more heartbroken about the outcome than the attack.

"I did notice the mom hysterically crying and ask if they had shot her son that was involved. I didn't know at the time that that was her son, she was crying hysterically on the phone. I asked her if she was okay, she was just crying, crying, crying and I offered her a bottle of water and she just sat there crying," said a Denver police official.

The two officers involved have been placed on standard administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
