Wheelchair-Bound Woman Trapped In Apartment For 2 Weeks Due To Broken Elevator

DENVER (CBS4) - People in a Denver apartment complex say they are living in unsanitary conditions, and management isn't doing anything to fix it.

Congress House Commons is just off 14th Avenue and Josephine Street. It's listed as Section 8 affordable housing by the federal government. The building is five floors and has about 32 units. Families there say major maintenance issues are not being addressed.

An elevator has not worked in more than two weeks and has left some disabled people trapped in their apartments. One wheelchair-bound woman now calls her apartment a prison.

"I'm just stuck here," she said.

She hasn't been able to leave her home for 16 days.

"I haven't been able to keep my doctor's appointment, go get my medicine," she said.

She's too afraid to reveal her identity in fear of retaliation from management, but says she and other tenants have had enough.

"It's very frustrating, especially when you don't see anything getting done," said another tenant, who also didn't want to be identified.

Tenant Michelle Green says in addition to the broken elevator, the building has water damage and mold problems. She says all tenants have gotten so far is a letter apologizing for the delay.

"I've called seven times and never gotten a call back," Green said.

CBS4 tracked down the ownership to Hudson Grove Properties, a company based in Lakewood. They were unavailable for comment.

According to Colorado law, landlords must maintain the quality of rental housing, a quality Congress House Commons tenants say is not being met.

"They are working on it, and they will keep us informed as to what's going on, that's all we've heard from them," Green said.

"Be able to go to the doctor's, be able to go buy my groceries," the wheelchair-bound woman said. "You know, it's real hard."

CBS4 hopes to hear back from the rental property company on Thursday.
