Suspect Accused Of Stabbing & Stealing Still On Run After 2 Police Chases

DENVER (CBS4) - The search continues for a suspect accused of stabbing a man, stealing his car, and leading officers on two chases.

The suspect was seen casing vehicles in a garage on Lincoln Street and East Tennessee Avenue, where he ended up stabbing a man who confronted him, then took his truck.

"All of the sudden this truck just comes up behind me, just flies by me," said witness Leonard Berndt.

Just yards away from where Berndt was nearly sideswiped on East Alameda Avenue, the truck allegedly caused a three-car accident involving an Aurora patrol car near South Moline Street. One woman was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"He managed to get around some cars ... police were behind him, cars were pulling over to the right ... couple of cars did not realize what was happening, were unable to move out of the way, and the police car was unable to stop," said Sgt. William Revelle of the Aurora Police Department.

That truck was a black Toyota Tacoma, the same one taken from a Denver parking garage hours earlier.

The chase on Alameda was actually the second of the day. The first pursuit included the location of 6th Avenue and Airport Boulevard.

At one point the suspect let a male passenger out of the truck, who police say was with him voluntarily and is now being interviewed.

Sgt. William Revelle said it's unusual for the suspect to stay in the stolen vehicle, and his driving was also somewhat peculiar.

"In both of the pursuits today he was driving ... very carefully. The driver was slowing down for lights, for traffic, and then accelerating around things as he could, and trying to get away," he said.

Despite his cautious driving, investigators say the suspect is a risk to the public and ask anyone who may have spotted the stolen truck to call 911 or contact Denver police.
