Mother Who Temporarily Lost Infant During Theater Shooting Very Emotional On Stand

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (CBS4) - Jurors in the theater shooting trial heard tearful testimony Wednesday from a young mother who was inside the theater with her children. She was wounded and at one point couldn't find her baby.

Patricia Rohrs was with her husband, daughter and infant boy when the shooting broke out. She ducked for cover and put her head down.

"As soon as I put it down I remember feeling a pain in my right leg. And I remember screaming and saying, 'I think I got shot,' " Rohrs said.

In the chaos her husband Jamie, who testified early in the trial, left with the infant, but put the baby down and then couldn't find him. Rohrs eventually made it toward an exit where she noticed her missing baby.

"I look up and I found Ethan and I remember grabbing him," Rohrs said while crying. "And that's when I knew that I had to get out," she said.

Jerrell Brooks was in the same row and came to the aid of the mother. He was hailed as a hero and told CBS4 at the time that people can't live in fear.

"Your kids going to get shot or kidnapped or anything, but you definitely have to take a lot of things into consideration to just be thankful for," Brooks said at the time.

The jury also was given a look inside the defendant's cellphone where numerous selfie photos were taken. One shows defendant James Holmes just before the mass shooting wearing black contact lenses.

Late Wednesday afternoon Gargi Datta, Holmes' former girlfriend, took the witness stand. She talked about her breakup shortly before the shooting occurred.

"I had already told him in the start it would be a casual relationship and I did not really feel much closer with him. So I wanted to break up with him," Datta said.

Datta had email chats with Holmes from October of 2011 to March of 2012. The prosecution is entering them as evidence that he wasn't losing his sanity.

Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the shooting that left 12 dead and dozens of others injured in the July 2012 shooting.
