Springs Mother Allegedly Leaves Kids In Hot SUV While At Tanning Salon

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - A Colorado Springs mother was ticketed after allegedly leaving her children inside an SUV while she went to a tanning salon.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon when temperatures outside reached 85 degrees.

The children -- ages eight, 10 and 18-months -- were reportedly screaming for help when someone in the parking lot heard them and called police.

Officers found the mother nine minutes after responding to the scene. She told them she was at a tanning salon.

"If you're parked here where we are, you're going to the gym or to the tanning salon; then you're in there for longer then you should have your kids in the car," witness Patricia Holland said.

"This can be a life-threatening event," Lt. Howard Black with Colorado Springs police said. "When we have temperatures just in the upper 70s, it is possible that we're talking about a life-saving event in getting that child out of that vehicle."

The tanning salon told KKTV that they actually have an area for children to play when parents are tanning.

The 33-year-old mother was ticketed with misdemeanor child abuse.
