Mom Who Lost Unborn Baby In Crash: 'I'll Never Be Able To Hold Her'

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4)- The mother who lost her unborn baby girl when a car crashed into her is still recovering from her injuries. She said she doesn't have hard feelings or animosity for the driver accused of hitting her.

"I think about my baby girl everyday. How I'll never be able to hold her but... you just do what you can," said Leah Montgomery.

Montgomery was five months pregnant when she was hit while walking with her little boy and mother. She doesn't remember the crash.

"I think that's a blessing from what people describe to me," said Montgomery.

Montgomery, 33, was walking with her mother and toddler in a stroller near the intersection of 138th and Holly Street on February 18 when two vehicles collided. One of the vehicles driven by a 16-year-old went onto the sidewalk and struck them.

Montgomery was critically injured and needed multiple surgeries. Her baby, a girl named Carly Marie, did not survive.

But she still finds hope because the car missed her 1½-year-old son Issac by just a few inches.

"His laugh is one of the best sounds in the world to me," said Montgomery.

Her husband, Matt, has left work at the Broomfield Police Department to care for her. His co-workers have set up a GoFundMe account to help with medical bills and expenses. They initially asked for $20,000 but supporters have donated nearly $28,000 to help the family.

"I can't believe how many people out there are willing to share," said Montgomery.

The day of the crash was warm and sunny and many rushed to help the family.

Hamaya Gharibyar stayed with Montgomery until paramedics arrived.

"I started to talk to her, telling her everything is okay, you'll be fine," said Gharibyar.

"There was a gentleman who stopped to help me. I'm very thankful for whoever that is and it really means a lot to me," said Montgomery.

The teen driver was charged on Thursday with careless driving resulting in unlawful termination of pregnancy and three counts of careless driving, one for each of the pedestrians.
