Wintry Mess On I-70 In High Country Causes Travel Problems
DENVER (CBS4) - Temperatures dropped and rain turned to snow in the Denver metro area Wednesday morning. The snow is a reminder of just how unpredictable spring weather is in Colorado.
It was a wintry mess along Interstate 70 during the morning as the Colorado Department of Transportation had to close some stretches of the highway near Georgetown and west of the Eisenhower Tunnel for a short time. The interstate has since been reopened and a majority of the chain requirements on highways have been lifted.
The mountains got a few inches of snow Tuesday but the conditions on the highway weren't as bad as Wednesday morning as the temperature dropped overnight. That combined with the moisture made for very slick roads.
Temperatures are again rising and that means there's a wet slushy mess on nearly all the roadways.
"You know, we've had great weather so far, we heard it's going to get bad as we get down, but we've had good weather. A little wet over Vail and otherwise we've had dry roads," said driver Wendy Nichols.
The only two areas where chains are currently required are Kenosha Pass and Hoosier Pass.
