Man Who Shot Students At Middle School Allowed To Leave Hospital For Visits

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4)- A judge has ruled that a man who shot two students outside a middle school will be allowed to leave the mental hospital for supervised visits.

Bruco Eastwood has been living in a state mental health facility after he was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the 2010 Deer Creek Middle School shooting.

Two students were injured in the shooting, Reagan Webber and Matt Thieu. Staff members at the school tackled Eastwood until police arrived and he was taken into custody.

Eastwood has been living in the mental health facility since the shooting.

Thieu was in court for the judge's ruling and was emotional as he left the courtroom. He believes it is unfair for Eastwood to be allowed to leave the facility for any reason, even if it is part of therapy.

Doctors said the next step in Eastwood's therapy is off-grounds supervised trips to places like fast food restaurants, shopping or even supervised work.

Eastwood currently lives in the minimum security section of the hospital with his own room. He is also allowed to administer his own medication.

Jeffco District Attorney Pete Weir objected to the request that he be allowed to leave for short trips but the judge agreed it is a critical part of his therapy.
