Man Who Stole Patrol Car, Setting Off Chase, Gets 10 Years
BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) — A man who stole a deputy sheriff's patrol car in Adams County and led authorities on a high-speed chase has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The Adams County District Attorney's Office says 32-year-old Bernard Jesse Martinez was sentenced Thursday. He previously pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated robbery and two counts of second-degree assault on a peace officer.
The deputy was called to a disturbance April 28 and found Martinez in the street waving his arms and acting erratically. Martinez then began hitting the hood of the patrol car and struggled with the deputy, who was trying to take him into custody.
Prosecutors say Martinez jumped into the patrol car and fled, leading officers on a chase that reached 100 mph. The chase ended when the patrol car crashed at an intersection.
