Democrats Reject Photo ID For Election Day Registration
DENVER (AP) — Democrats rejected GOP proposals to require photo identification for voters registering on Election Day or on the days immediately prior.
Democrats in 2013 used majorities in both chambers to overhaul the state's election rules, allowing voters to register any time until Election Day.
Republicans critical of same-day voter registration argue it leaves the state vulnerable to fraud. But Democrats and supporters of the new law maintain that cases of fraud are rare and that a photo-ID requirement would disenfranchise minority and elderly voters.
A Democrat-led House committee rejected two Republican bills Wednesday to mandate photo ID when people registered to vote within 22 days of an election. One of the bills would have asked voters to decide whether to enact the change, while the other would have implemented it through the Legislature.
