DU Students: 'Protect Yourself' After Latest Attack Near Campus

DENVER (CBS4)- Students at the University of Denver are on alert after a man attacked a woman near campus this week. The female student was able to fight him off but the suspect remains on the run.

The woman was approached by a man about 10 p.m. Tuesday in front of the School of Theology near Iliff and York, very close to the campus. The man grabbed her but she was able to fight him off and got away.

The suspect is described as a white male, 5-foot-11, about 170 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans and a red sweatshirt.

Both DU campus police and detectives with the Denver Police Department are investigating the incident. In a released statement they said the woman was "forcibly fondled." They classify it as "unlawful sexual contact."

They alerted DU students with an email informing them about the incident and advising them to take precautions.

"They do continue to happen. It's nice that they let us know but it seems like they could do more," said DU student Mattie Hannigan.

Some DU students say they've grown used to, almost unfazed, by reports of male suspects grabbing them. A similar incident happened last year about the same time on campus.

Although it's not a trend, DU student Tsion Sherifew said she has been taking precautions.

"I ususally feel safe but there are stories where people are being robbed at gun point, but besides that I feel safe," said Sherifew.

DU campus police are reminding students about their escort home program. The university also offers self defense classes on campus.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call campus police.
