Lots To Do, See With Alpine World Ski Championships In Colorado

BEAVER CREEK SKI RESORT, Colo. (CBS4) - Millions of people are expected to tune in to watch the biggest alpine skiing event of the year, and it's all taking place over the next two weeks in the Vail Valley.

Vail and Beaver Creek are hosting the Alpine World Ski Championships for the first time in 16 years.

The event organizers have made it easy for visitors to take in the sights and sounds.

"The races are completely free and open to the public," Vail Valley Foundation spokeswoman Kate Peters said. "We've been getting a lot of questions about tickets and how to get up here. Transportation, concerts and the races themselves are all completely free to spectators."

Almost all of the races will be held at Beaver Creek Ski Area, so the Red Tail Finish Stadium is the spot to be.

Races usually start around 10 or 11 a.m. but it's recommended visitors arriving in or staying in Avon give themselves about an hour to get up to the resort.

"If it's a day when it's busy everyone is going to want to catch the shuttle at the same time," Peters said. "But then we also want people to get up there early because we've got a great pre-live show and since it's all free to the public you'll want to make sure to get a good seat."

There will be strict security. Only small personal bags will be allowed into the stadium.

"Outside beverages, weapons, things like that are of course prohibited but you can bring a blanket into the stands and get comfortable," Peters said.

If you can't make it to one of the races there are still dozens of events planned in Vail, Avon and Beaver Creek.

"The championships are two weeks full of morning-to-night activities. We have races going on almost every day, if not a full race then at least a qualifying or practice run. And then we've got concerts, music festivities going all the way into the evening."
