With World Ski Championships Set To Start, Be Ready For Heavy I-70 Traffic

BEAVER CREEK, Colo. (CBS4) - Traffic on Interstate 70 in the high country this month might get heavier than usual as the best skiers in the world gather in Eagle County.

The Alpine World Ski Championships begin this week, and officials with the Colorado Department of Transportation say all the people heading up to Vail and Beaver Creek will likely mean an increase in volume on I-70.

Drivers should be prepared to spend more time on the highway than usual during their trips to and from the high country during the competition, according to CDOT.

"During some of the higher traffic periods, some slowdowns should be expected around the Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnels," CDOT spokesman Ryan Rice said in a prepared statement.

Rice also said there could be slowdowns around I-70's main Avon Interchange -- Exit 168. Beaver Creek Ski Resort is accessed by getting off the highway in Avon.

The second weekend of the championships is also Presidents Day Weekend, which is "traditionally one of our busiest travel weekends during the winter," according to Rice.

The championships include 700 athletes from more than 70 nations. Opening ceremonies take place on Monday and closing ceremonies are on Feb. 15. There's no fee for going to watch the events in person.
