North Dakota Beats Northern Colorado 33-14

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) — Bubba Schweigert's first season as head coach at his alma mater ended on a good note Saturday when North Dakota beat Northern Colorado 33-14 for its first road win of the season.

It also marked the first time this season that UND won for the second straight week.

Jer Garman ran for 164 and two touchdowns and UND took advantage of six UNC turnovers to snap an eight-game road losing streak.

UND (5-7, 3-5 Big Sky) forced four fumbles and intercepted two passes. It scored 23 points off UNC turnovers.

"That's what we preach to the guys, at the end of plays having a chance for a turnover," Schweigert said. "When you play with great effort your have that opportunity."

Garman scored on runs of 2 and 8 yards. Reid Taubenheim kicked field goals of 47, 47, 38 and 36 yards.

"Special teams played a huge role today and we got a number of field goals to keep scoring points and keep the momentum on our side," Schweigert said.

It took North Dakota eight plays to grab the lead for good. Keaton Studsrud threw an 11-yard TD pass to Josh Seibel just 3:45 into the game.

Garman made it 14-0 with an 8-yard TD run with 14:54 left in the half. The drive was set up by a Northern Colorado fumble on its own 42.

Taubenheim's 47-yard field goal with 2:37 left in the half made it 17-0 at the break.

It was 20-0 before UNC (3-8, 2-6) got on the board on Sean Rubalcaba's 85-yard TD pass to Dimitri Stimphil. The Northern Colorado receiver has caught a pass in 34 straight games.

Rubalcaba lost a fumble and was picked off twice. He was 18 for 29 for 211 yards for the Bears, who lost five of their last six games. Jonathan Newsom came on late to complete 8 of 10 passes for 90 yards and a TD.

Stimphil caught nine passes for 157 yards, including a 23-yarder with 24 seconds left in the game.

UND held the Bears to 18 yards rushing on 20 carries, but the still outgained UND 319-239

The win gives UND a 14-13 lead in the all-time series.

"With the exception of the one big play on defense, we played pretty solid defense and ran the ball effectively," Schweigert said.
